you obviously haven't tried it!

try it in a train carriage - you'll soon have it all to yourself!

(for effect you can also add the magic incantation: "Kum bah yah my Lordy, kum bah yah")

He ripped The Beatles off for everything else, so why not?

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

if i wear a dog-collar - and sit reading a huge bible - then I can guarantee a full 6-seater to myself on a train... (unless it totally backfires and I attract a genuine christian nutter...)

Never EVER worth the risk of a genuine Christian nutter. The ones who feel the need to tell everyone how they have found Jesus and how I should too. What would Planet Hoboh do, Hoboh? You're talking to a swing voter.

Some years ago I listened to a guy being interviewed on R4 who'd released a book about living a good life without paying for very much of it. One of his scams, as I recall, was to travel by train dressed as a vicar. As such, he was never asked to produce his ticket. Was it you?

Bruce, you shouldn't have said that; it's got my hackles well and truly raised. Where I live churches of any denomination or belief are exempt from paying council rates. What the criteria for becoming a 'church' are I have no idea - but they seem to be a bit free and easy. The big two here are the catholic type - the Romans and the Protestants.

Where I used to live many years ago was a posh residential area with a population earning well and truly above the national average and properties to suit. At that time the Roman Catholic church owned swathes of land within the boundaries of the local council. Rates by the way are calculated on the unimproved capital value of land as assessed by the Valuer General's Department. The church owned acre upon acre of land; some with churches, some with schools and some residential property assigned for staff accommodation. The Anglican church, among other properties, owned all the suburb called Glebe. Some of you will know the meaning of 'glebe', but for the information of those who do not - it's a term for land under the ownership of a church used to garner income. I believe that the Anglican church has since sold some of its 'investments' but I have no idea as to how much of it remains under its control.

Did either of these churches pay their dues to society as they expect their devotees to do? Like heck they did. I worked for an organisation which, whilst autonomous, was in effect an arm of the state's government. Did that organisation resile from its obligation as a citizen to pay council rates just because as a governmental institution it was exempt from such an impost? No, it didn't. Local councils were .requested to forward annual rate accounts to the organisation's many branches (400+) and then paid them. Because these were not a required expenditure the entries were classified as 'ex-gratia' payments.

It says a lot when a semi-governmental organisation pays its bills and churches do not. Parasites, the lot of them.

Sorry, TANGO, but it really does get 'up my nose'.

Why sorry Dujon? Just a case of the top enders making the rules and profitting by them at the expense of others. Loads of churches in the working class world ( the ones with your everyday clergy who actually carry out charity work and try to help people; the ones who daren't leave their doors open for fear of theft and the ones with rain pouring in where the lead from the rooves have been nicked) have closed down due to lack of funds, whilst the Vatican and the Anglican heirarchy look after their business empires. Don't think all Christians/Anglicans etc agree with anything -even much- that goes on in the wonderful world of eclesiastical power. High Church and state have ruled the roost since time immemorial as titles; little if anything of it has much to do with God, particularly these days.

When the Vatican and co start re-distributing wealth in th name of God instead of the stock-exchange I might have a change of view. Don't hold your breath though.
