Will Bolton throw the City game to get into Europe?

I'm not a Bolton fan, but I've just joined this forum as I wanted to ask Bolton fans about this weird scenario on the final day.

Sorry, if this has already been discussed but I had a quick look and couldn't see it.

Basically, if Bolton lose to City in the cup final, and City are 5th needing to win on the last day to finish top 4 - Bolton would have to lose that final league game to get into Europe! However, if you beat City and make them finish 5th, you will miss out as the last Europa place would then go to 6th place, and not the FA runners-up.

So I take it that in that scenario, Bolton wont even be trying to beat City?

I also stand by my original point, because it won't matter, because we're going to win the Cup and finish fourth

I think any right-minded fan will want to earn their place in Europe, the league, the cup, anything. We're not West Ham

Ok, well assuming you do lose the final and dont finish in the top 5...

So if you need to lose the final match to get into Europe, is that what you would want? Do you think the players will go out there and lose deliberately? Would Coyle admit before the game that that was what they were intending to do? I dont see why he should feel guilty about it - you're entitled to do what you need to do in order to qualify. It's not your fault that the rules are so messed up that it benefits you to lose a match!

I can't see the powers that be letting us get away with it.

But we could whip out Coyle's 3-3-4 formation with Robbo in goal as an experiment I suppose

Thankfully it's a narrow scenario, and I also wouldn't have any worries about us needing to throw a game against a clearly superior set of moneybags. But to get through in that way - nah, not for me.

Didn't the filth play a reserve team in the last game of the season recently? Surely we'd get away with it too and not incur a points penalty seeing as we're one of the big boys now

As someone who has never enjoyed the confidence of Owen Coyle, ever met him, or indeed ever shared his thoughts, or any other of the playing staff or coaching staff, I feel I am qualified to speak on their collective behalves.

I agree. And it would be ridiculous if you got fined for it. As I said, its not your fault that the rules are so messed up. You're entitled to do what's necessary for the good of your own team - even if that means losing the game.

Also, I would love it if Coyle was honest about it in the press conference before the game. When some journo asks him whether or not they'll be trying hard, it would be great if he replied 'No, of course we wont be. We'll be going out there to lose as we want to get into Europe. If we win, the Euro dream is over, so we must make sure that doesnt happen.' !

Well basically, if you lose the cup final to City, you will need them to finish in the top 4 so that you can qualify for the Europa League. And as you play them on the last day, you might have a big say in whether they do finish in the top 4 or not.
