Looking at the mechanism of injury it would suggest more of a PCL tear than an ACL tear with the impact being fairly front on. The cut will just have been superficial damage from the actual impact. Another thing suggesting against an ACL injury is his 6 month recovery time, which is smack inbetween the 3 months for a modern synthetic graft treatment (but risky) and the traditional 9-12 months for a traditional reconstruction.

Nah you'd be looking at more like a 6-8 week lay off there. Also, the mechanism of injury would be through impact from the side. Holden's was straight front on.

Thing is how do we know the injury was sustained by the "gash or impact" directly?

It could just as easily have been his knee getting forced back by the impact and twisting something round the back? It may well be that rather than the actual impact/flesh wound!

FWIW which ain't much, but I wouldn't be surprised if his actual comeback date was quite a bit further away than 6 months. The fact they haven't released details of the actual injury is suspicious.

Not if it's a rupture.. I was out for 8 weeks with a grade III tear a couple of years ago

Complete rupture is a grade III. The collateral ligaments are nowhere near as important at stabilising the knee as the cruciates. Less stress goes through them meaning they are able to heal quicker etc.

Hmm.. Are you sure? I was told a complete rupture would have me under the surgeons knife.. I was chuffed when it came back as a tear (partial rupture)

Pretty sure. Saw enough of them when I was in Aus. Collateral ligaments very very rarely need operating on. Usually a brace to stabilse the knee avoiding valgus/varus movement is enough with rehab from there.

With regards to the grading, grade 1 and 2 are incomplete, with 3 being complete.

BBC Live Text describes Holden as being out 'after damaging cruciate knee ligaments'. Whether they have confirmation or are just guessing, who knows?
