they do not have to make them.
Start the thread - why not? It's going to be the political debate...
I've yet to hear an economist say that the cuts are absolutely necessary. In fact most argue against them, especially in the way they're being carried out.

The fact that out of all "Westernised" countries we had one of the lowest deficits by GDP yet are making the most radical and deep cuts makes you sit up and think. Added to the fact that in the past 30 years we've effectively never been out of deficit and you wonder.

I'm no economic expert so you can only listen to those that are. Its easy for doommongers to point to Greece and say "thas us if we don't do this". But like I say every expert I've heard has said that is absolutely not the case.

So it brings me to the inevitable conclusion that the cuts are in fact politically motivated rather than out of necessity!
Budget deficits at the moment according to the Economist Intelligence Unit

US 8.8%
China 1.7%
Japan 7.9%
Germany 0.5%
Britain 9%
France 6.4%
Greece 8.1%
Spain 6.7%

Of course debt is another matter, depends if you're talking just public where we're actually doing OK vs the G7, although it's heading north and if we were to do nothing it would shoot past 100% and keep on going, not to mention our cost of borrowing new money would go up and credit rating down.

Image

Anyway just wanted to stick a few figures up... There's a lot more in OBR reports and the budget forecasts themselves but it's all a bit dry!
I wonder whether our deficit would compare favourably with the German's if we had their previous levels of military commitment? And what their potential future military commitments will do to it? I'm guessing "defence" is one of our biggest drains.

£44bn/£669bn on Defence

To be fair I'd rather we were us at the moment than the Germans regards Libya, ther absteining in the UN vote is pretty poor.

I found this graph really interesting:

http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=wb- ... EU:FRA:GBR" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Essentially the gap between the German and British defence spending stands at about £9bn. Is it possible to extrapolate those figures (German spending at c. £27bn p.a., UK at c. £36bn) and see what direct impact defence spending alone is having on our economy?

(The interest isn't just with regards to Libya, its more wondering what the motivation behind French/British military cooperation is based on, and why a "European defence force" isn't such a bad idea).

Now then, today I'm angry for having stubbed my toes last night, whilst barefoot, against the skirting board, thus occasioning the toe next to the big toe on my right foot to burst at the base of the nail.
If you were woken up by the sound of someone swearing loudly at around 1:30 this morning, it was me!

Creeping privatisation of the NHS. More particularly the Blood Donor service.

My current donations stand at 82 but if the service is partially privatised to allow companies to make a profit from transporting my blood products thats me out of it.

I just typed a post to post here and it said that im forbidden to post...

I'm not angry about it.

I just edited in what the post was going to be about; and it was forbidden, I think I've been forbidden to post the words Sta* War-s :o

(I haven't) the banned words are Pro-zac and/ or Xa-nax

Ok here is the general gist of the Original post: have no spending money to go to look for SW Videos at op shop, Our Dog (Afghan Hound) needs money for Pro-zac & Xan-ax and hour long walks (I'm the lazy **** who will have to walk him, we have another dog but I'll put him in the front of the house (but I promise to still walk him sometimes))

and my idea for treating the dog was better: every time he whimpers at night give him a Chicken wing

Now I have to Go Mow the backyard for a bloody house inspection! I am Angry

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

found out the vet bill was $150 alone.

I'm Angry that the Charlie Sheen 20/20 show was not shown on Channel 9.
they are about a month behind and skipped 1 or 2 when the Cricket World Cup was on.
They screen Two and a half men so maybe that's why they didn't show it.

Lying in the face of video evidence. Hmm, interesting...

have been following it on and off....

to watch the video of the incident - the police have no defence at all - I defy anyone to explain how Tomlinson is offering any threat at all - at no time is he facing the police - he is always walking away slowly and has his hands in his pockets. how on earth does that justify being batoned and pushed violently to the ground?

it leads to his death. it is going too far to suggest anyone could have predicted that - but, fact is, it was totally un-necessary - and the police are lying through their teeth...
