It might depend on the precise language of the contract. I'm sure the West Ham management and lawyers checked it out thoroughly. They are not complete idiots. Oh... wait...Harry Genshaw wrote:Didn't Joe Royle fail on those grounds (after appeal) with City a few years ago? He argued that they were still a Prem team until the end of trading on 30th June. City argued they were no longer a Prem side once they'd been mathematically relegated - iirc City won and Royle had to hand back quite a wedge

'Apparently' sparked when a player said he was 'too tired' to sign an autograph. EDIT: Demba Ba, according to KUMB.
Laugh a minute. It just won't be the same next season without them. Maybe Venky's and the Dingles can step up in their place or Newcastle can have another run at it.

West Ham United's end of season Gala ended in chaos as Police were called after a fight erupted.
The disturbance was said to have started after one first team member - believed to be Senegalese striker Demba Ba - refused to sign an autograph, claiming he was 'too tired'.
Police were called to deal with the ensuing outbreak of violence which saw, according to reports, tables and chairs being used as weapons in a scene more suited to an old-school Western movie than an end-of-season dinner.
Fans had paid up to £250 each to attend the evening - ironically described by the club in promotional material as 'a simply unmissable evening' - which was hosted by TV personality Ben Shepherd.

The husband of vice-chair Karren Brady is understood to have been involved in a violent disagreement with travelling West Ham fans following yesterday's 3-2 defeat at Wigan.
Paul Peschisolido - who is also the current manager of Burton Albion - is reported to have lost his temper when a supporter approached his wife in their first-class carriage as they returned to the Midlands with their children following the match, which condemned the Irons to relegation.
Differing accounts of the events leading up to Peschisolido's intervention have been given, although all are consistent in claiming that 40-year-old former Sheffield United star had to be physically restrained from attacking the fan.
Brady - whose tenure as vice-chair began just 15 months ago - is no stranger to controversy where Hammers fans are concerned.
Last year she was held culpable for the decision to remove complimentory season tickets from the family of John Lyall, whilst only last week she told Hammers fans to 'bog off' following her absence from the recent 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Some blithering idiot on KUMB claims he spoke with her on the train South. He asked when the new manager would be appointed and then wrote an application out & gave it her. She wasn't for playing & told him to do one, whereupon the guy called her " a slag".The husband of vice-chair Karren Brady is understood to have been involved in a violent disagreement with travelling West Ham fans following yesterday's 3-2 defeat at Wigan.

Mr Brrrrady then stood up to the guy. Don't blame him, really.
Still, it all adds to the legend.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Tony Cottee has been quoted as saying they're a set of idiots. The board that is.

Can't wait for the Arsenal one. Someone's venison might get over cooked
They might serve the 1999 Châteauneuf-du-Pape rather than the 1998

Karren Brady was on the train to Birmingham yesterday in first class on the carraige next to us after the game, one West Ham fan asked her when a new West Ham manager will be appointed and she said "sometime in the next few weeks." Anyway after that another West Ham fan wrote up a CV with his name, number and put on it that he had won the Champions League on football manager and gave it to her, She replied "Have another beer" while her husband Peschisolodo called the Fan a "faggot" and Miss Brady had to stop her husband from trying to start a fight. It was entertaining to say the least, the cow then pointed out the fan to the Police, He was only having a bit of banter wonder if she will write about this in her poxy column

The inquest into Ham's delightful relegation the papers today is like the Queen has died. References include 'big club' and 'one of the most cherished football teams in these islands'.

Ah, here we go ..... "West Ham has said one of its players was racially abused at an end-of-season dinner during which trouble flared.
BBC football correspondent Dan Roan said forward Demba Ba was the target of the abuse during Monday's gala dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London".
At almost any other club I'd think "nah ! Easy excuse to switch the blame". But these are East Enders when all's said & done !!

Demba Ba on talksport now...this could end with more chuckles.
He says he gave someone an autograph, the guy asked him how he was feeling, Ba said he was feeling tired, the West Ham fan said I'm tired of watching you play every week. Ba said he was shocked that he said that (not sure why!) and then the other guy just randomly went nutty after Ba spoke to Da Costa.
He spoke very well about the whole situation actually, he even showed some expert question dodging when asked about his future.

so - to sum up...
would this be a story about a footballer who refused to give an autograph because he couldn't be arsed - which actually turns out to be a story about a footballer who gave an autograph quite freely and then was the victim of a lunatic fan being a tosser?
