typical gooner - history=trophies..... WRONG!!!
Correct me if i'm wrong but the majority of 'historic moments' tend to be things like becoming league champions, FA Cup winners or games where you beat someone you really shouldn't (like when we beat barca this season :D ) Not winning 1-0 at home to a Scunthorpe United on a wet saturday afternoon?
I will correct you as you are wrong. Not only are you wrong but you're a bit embarrassing. Historic moments are those in which you're club defy all the odds, exceed all expectations and, regardless of what division we are in, or whatever round of the cup it is, triumph over all expectation. I'm sorry, GG, but you really are a pathetic 'me too' flange when it comes to having even the most basic understanding of passionate support. Sorry, but it's obvious from your comments.
May the bridges I burn light your way

You obviously didn't read my post properly Bruce. For one, it was a gentle tease you are taking way too seriously, and secondly I also included in my 'historic moments' definition games where you beat someone you really aren't expecting to. I'd say that refers to 'Defying the odds' and 'against all expectation' wouldnt you? The joke was that for Bolton beating arsenal is a historic moment up on your wall because (presumably?) it is against all odds, beating a team you aren't expecting to. Geddit? Joke? Sigh...

Good job I don't give a toss your opinion on whether I'm a passionate fan or not isn't it?! ;)

Yep, because we were in a lower league, having to earn promotion rather than buy it in a backroom deal like Arsenal did.

You need to mix your attempted humour with humility. It's in short enough supply round your way for a club so noisily unsuccessful.

GG was joking - fair enough - we shouldn't take ourselves THAT seriously that we fall out over it...

It is interesting as to why it doesn't come across as funny...

1. I think DSB is right - all Gooner fans are tarred with the smug-tosser Arsenal brush - like it or not, that's the way it is. All arsenal fans start out with this millstone around their neck - Arsenal fans in general don't do themselves any favours. That's not really fair - but it is how it is... personally I think GG has been around on here long enough without being a WUM for us to cut her some slack - but, such comments - coming from an arsenal fan - sound very different than they would from one of our local rivals - a club with which we have some kind of local connection or something in common - better explained in 2.

2. I think we understand "history" in a different way. it is hard to put into words - perhaps it is impossibly intangible - but it is something to do with our experience. it isn't GGs fault - but Arsenal simply do not have the depth of history that we have - and by that i don't just mean the length of time in existence - i mean that we have experienced proper depths that Gooners can't even conceive - and that makes our whole experience deeper and our sense of "history" stronger. (as i said - impossible to put into words) Gooners are like spoilt/sheltered children.... Bolton fans are like the kids whose rough experience of life has etched care lines into their faces and thus made them grow up quicker...

3. again - simply because if who we are and who arsenal are - it IS funny for Bolton to taunt arsenal about not winning trophies - but it isn't funny for Gooners to taunt Bolton for lack of trophies. It doesn't really sound fair. does it - but that's the way it is. In the same way - if Bolton go ahead at the emirates and sing "who are you?" (which - in the main - we don't) - then that is funny. if arsenal go ahead against bolton at the emirates and chant "who are you?" (which they DO - and in fact is the ONLY thing they chant) - then it just sounds wanky and stupid. that's just the way it is - it IS funny for an underdog to taunt a "big club" - but NOT funny for a "big club" to taunt an underdog. I'm sure there are compensations to being arsenal - to counteract this unfairness - not sure I can see what they are - but at least they get to win more than they lose...

so - that makes it all seem unfair, doesn't it? I can't really see any way that Gooners could successfully taunt Bolton. Calling us "shit" or "trophyless" or "crap" or "losers" just bounces off - it doesn't hurt us - in fact, the opposite - it just makes us think the accuser is a smug gooner who understands nothing about being a proper fan. we sing wanky wanky wanderers ourselves ffs!!

again - it's not GGs fault - it's just how it is.... I don't doubt GGs commitment to Arsenal for a moment - she is a fan - and has been for many years... but - the truth is, Bolton fans will never really view Arsenal fans as "proper" fans because they are largely untested - they don't know what it is like to have been in the (old) 4th division - all the way down and up. fans that have only really seen the "ups", we will never view as "proper" fans... not GGs fault - or even Arsenal's fault - just how it is. GG tells me there are downs - but these amount to occasionally losing twice in a row - or coming 3rd rather than 1st - or getting knocked out in the later rounds of the champions league.... yeah - they are downs - but it's all relative - and we wouldn't see them as serious downs!

either that - or we have a serious sense-of-humour bypass! (maybe both!)

I was only having a gentle tease, sorry if it came accross as arrogant or aggressive/up myself in any form. i certainly didn't mean it to. Quite mimpressed at how Bish has managed to kind of defend my intentions yet simultaneously slag off Arsenal and its fans at the same time ;)
