Re: Elmander signs for Galatasaray
In all honesty, as much as Elmander has to be held accountable for his crap performances, and Megson accountable for his terrible man-management of Elmander, the club need to look at their policy on player contracts.
I think it's fairly well accepted that we are/have been willing to pay big wages to secure players in the last 5-8 years but one of our more frustrating recent trends seems to be the contract policy to be very rarely signing players to longer than 3 year deals at a time.
I can understand with the fragile debt we don't want to burden ourselves in case of relegation, but if you're putting 8.2M into signing one player (especially outside the Premier League-and considering his age) on however much a week, it stands to reason you offer him at the very least four years.
There was never anywhere for Elmander to go. At best he'd have performed up to his pricetag and will have been sold on for about the price we paid give or take a couple of million either way. (Not many clubs will have been willing to pay another 8M fee for a player who is pushing 30) and the likelyhood of all that happening was very small given his age, bedding in periods, the fact he was never THAT good in France in the first place.
Bad business all round.

Re: Elmander signs for Galatasaray
they'll not sign a forward that replaces davies , we've just lost* 17 million not converting johan after his drought started in the season (in late october ? apparantly) by frigging about with him in midfield after sturidge come here / holden got hurt.Lord Kangana wrote:
I'd say thats a reasonably important consideration given our financial plight. So yeah, more Anelkas, less Elmanders please. If we're not to be completely fooked very soon.

Re: Elmander signs for Galatasaray
The previous 2 1/2 years of pretty constant failure had sealed the fate of Elmander if he was to move on. If he had a great season, on a free. If he had a shit season, on a free. Regardless of where he was played in the final 1/6th of his time here.
We were never going to recoup anything on him unless he suddenly got all altruistic and signed a new contract in the knowledge we could then make a profit on him when sold. And I can't remember the last BWFC multi-million pound striker that did that.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

I think LK might have been deliberately obtuse in ignoring Anelka...a1 wrote:anelka.Lord Kangana wrote:The previous 2 1/2 years of pretty constant failure had sealed the fate of Elmander if he was to move on. or we couldve offered johan £72k a week to make him stay. he'd've stopped then.
Re: Elmander signs for Galatasaray
I would agree with that PROVIDING that you can build something into their contract that says in the event of relegation you will take a 25%/30%/40% whatever drop in wages. If you cant then a club like us has to take up the offer of a shorter contract because saying £40k a week wages in the championship = administration.jimbo_bwfc wrote:In all honesty, as much as Elmander has to be held accountable for his crap performances, and Megson accountable for his terrible man-management of Elmander, the club need to look at their policy on player contracts.

One other benefit of tying a big money signing to a longer contract, is that amortisation (depreciation of intangible assets) takes place over a longer period of time so you dont loss as much per year on their contracts.
Who's that coming up the hill boys,
The Wanderers are coming up the hill boys,
They all laugh at us, they all mock at us,
They all say our days are numbered,
Born to be a Wanderer, victorious are we....

This!Prufrock wrote:Fook me. We've some cretins. The lad is unbelieeeeevably frustrating. So much talent and so little application. A big strong unit who never ever made the most of it, often didn't seem to fancy it. Despite all that, and spending half the season in midfield, he is still our top scorer, and comfortably. I'm not too sure 18 in 91 is particularly terrible, though of course it isn't stellar. We massively overpaid for him, which has added to the sense of frustration. He was never worth £8million, not to a club like ours, but equally he is worth a lot more than nowt. That said all those apparently delighted folk seem to forget we go into next season with Klasnic, Davies and, well, no-one. And no money coming in from this deal to replace him. Not entirely sure why they aren't worried. Apart from LL of course, coz he knows we've got Sturridge in the bag.
I'm disappointed because we can't afford to let players of decent quality just walk out of the club. Coyle was the manager to get the best out of him, not Megson... so we can pretty much write the first two seasons off.
Good luck Elmo.

Re: Elmander signs for Galatasaray
Hard cold fact is that Elmander is our top scorer this season despite being totally shite, uninterested and useless and playing in midfield for half the season.
I do wonder what that says about Kevin Davies who has had the luxury of playing up front all season and taking the penalties!

You can make a lot of comments about Elmander but I never thought he looked uninterested. He probably covers more ground than anyone else. Think your frustration at losing him is getting the best of you.BWFC_Insane wrote:Hard cold fact is that Elmander is our top scorer this season despite being totally shite, uninterested and useless and playing in midfield for half the season.

I think you're missing my point. I was merely saying the things people in this thread are saying about Elmander. I agree with you, but according to the masses on here he's all those things.seanworth wrote:You can make a lot of comments about Elmander but I never thought he looked uninterested. So my point being as he's shite, lazy, uninterested and all those things he's still our top scorer and IF any of those are true it really doesn't say much for Kevin Davies!
