If we are talking team goals this is surely up there...

I still prefer Mark Davies'.

Does anyone remember when we came within a whisker of signing Juan Pablo Sorin. Allardyce and Gartside went to Paris to seal the deal but it fell through in the end. I think it was the same summer when we nearly signed Rivaldo. What a team that could have been!

The Guardian Writers poll

David Pleat
Best goal Bolton's American midfielder Stuart Holden, who subsequently broke a leg, getting his reward for a lung-bursting run in the last few seconds to score after his team had apparently been deflated by a Blackburn equaliser three minutes from time.
Pfffft.

And another writer votes for Elmander's goal v Wolves

Shit long ball team that we are.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Indeed - Holden's goal was knocked down to him from a long punt. As a British manager who won three European Cups without ever getting knighted put it, "There's no such thing as the long ball or the short ball - just the right ball."

I wondered how they define a "long ball" on that site...

is it a long ball when jussi hoofs it upfield for Davo

but

NOT a long ball when Neville nice people it crossfield in the general direction of Nani

and

NOT a long ball when Fabregas leathers it forward for arshavin to run onto...

Which site? Opta have very rigid definitions... I had a discussion with them about it after they defined our (six-pass) goal at Pompey last season as "from a set-piece" because it started with a throw-in...

It's a long ball when hit by non - Arsenal/Chelsea/United/City/Liverpool/Spuds players.

Otherwise it's an incisive visionary pass.
They're dirty, they're filthy, they're never gonna last.
Poor man last, rich man first.
