Elmander signs for Galatasaray

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

Doesn't look like we tried too hard to hang on to him if we didn't speak after November.

Doesn't sound like he did either. We offered him the same deal for one year, £2.6m, or reduced terms for a longer contract. I'm guessing the reduced terms weren't 2/6. Ball was in his court, he chose not to accept.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Indeed and there is not a lot you can do about that.

But you can't blame Elmander or the club. From his point of view at 29 you're not going to take a 1 year deal. Nor are you going to accept reduced terms when you are probably looking for one last pay day to set you up, he'll be paid more in Turkey and pay less tax.

Club of course had to try and hedge their bets and couldn't offer him 4 years on 50K say as it would present a significant further investment in a player we'd not recoup value on.

Unfortunate set of circumstances. Hopefully by the end of the summer though we'll be saying "Johan who?" rather than wishing he was still here.

Regardless of absolutely everything else, if he was on £50,000 a week...I'm glad he's gone.

No way we can be paying a player that.

Indeed but you won't have the expenditure of J Elmander. Nor the family expecting a certain lifestyle and for that lifestyle to be sustainable for a long long time.

OK say he was and let's ignore his performance for a second as you do - £2.6m a year out of over £46m... He wasn't bleeding the club dry all by himself.

If we were to bring our wages down to something more manageable like £30m (as in 2007), I'd still say we should be able to stretch to £2.6m for what should be our most high profile player..

Not really fair that as men of the cloth are there for everyone and provide an opportunity to speak to on a confidential basis about your worries, problems etc.

I'll bet there's a few men of the cloth who have buried more than Elmo did over the last 3 years.
They're dirty, they're filthy, they're never gonna last.

I don't hate it.

I don't think footballers should earn what they do, but then they are part of an industry that generates a lot of money and they themselves are the main reason for that. So its part of the way the world works. So I can live with that.

What irks me slightly is that folk look at their lives and say "if I was earning 50K a week I could easily drop to 20 for the sake of staying at a better club/loyalty etc". There will be folk around the world who will say "look at that rich bastard earning £8 an hour. He could easily cope with £4 we only earn that in a week". Its all relative. Footballers even though they're at the top end are no exception. Take half their money away and in most cases they would have to re-assess their lifestyle. Even if that lifestyle seems lavish to you or me, thats still a relative reality. Like a homeless man describing your life as lavish and excessive, you'd see it as harsh. Well so would a footballer.

I'm confussled by the 50k figure. The B(E)N report says he cost £8.2m (which I think we all finally agreed upon rather than £11.2) and a further £5m in wages over the 3 years. That would be nearer £32k per week, no?

How about if Wanderers paid you £33k and a pork pie a week, like Nolan?
