Both massively overrated and going for amounts double that of their 'realistic' best value.

£17m clause is a guess for me as earlier on in the season it was reported that it was £15m rising to £18m if he played for England, that was also a Nixon 'exclusive'

Young players' fees are increased by their potential (and, frankly, Englishness). Henderson is 20 and Liverpool will be hoping he develops into a world-class player, in which case £20m is a good deal. That, along with Newcastle's deadline-day brinksmanship and FSG's desire to back their man (and appease the fans) after selling Torres, is why they went to £35m for Carroll (age 22). They're both England players already but they could both radically improve - which would also increase their resale value (cf Cronaldo to RM).

By contrast, Holden is 26 this summer. So is Ashley Young. Cahill is 26 in December. Although each could and should get wiser as he matures, by this stage what you see is basically what you get. Indeed by that rationale (and the generally accepted, if not entirely sensible, notion that strikers are more expensive than midfielders are more expensive than defenders are more expensive than goalkeepers) £17m for Cahill is a much higher price than £20m for Henderson.

Surely the main difference is our league runs on a different financial scale to any other league except the higher end of La Liga.

Middle of the way Premier League such as Bolton, Blackburn and Sunderland can hold out more and work on a different financial payscale to pretty much every team in Europe bar the cream of the crop in each league top 4/5 in Italy, top 4/5 in Spain, Lyon, Bayern Munich and maybe a couple of other German teams.

When players move around from those clubs, they're equally overpriced- Aquilani 20M to Liverpool for example- will Henderson offer more to Liverpool than Alberto Aquilani? He'd struggle not to.

Players are only overpriced once they fail. If Jordan Henderson gives Liverpool 10 years service, helps them win trophies and performs consistantly in the first team- will he have been overpriced? No. He has potential to do that, obviously there's the risk, his talent is just potential, but then because he's English and overpriced, people get in a kerfuffle about it yet only bat an eye at fees of 30-40M being mentioned for players like Alexis Sanchez, Pastore and Aguero, whose talents are too unrealised and would present a risk to buy.

Why do English players attract a premium?

Good question. A number of factors. Even star-studded, money-no-object squads like to have a certain number of domestic players - whether it's long-termers like Lampard and Terry or newbies like Barry and Milner.

There's no doubt also that they're more saleable because they're higher profile. More people have heard of Jordan Henderson (Sunderland, 20, one England cap) than say Barry Bannan (Villa, 21, five Scotland caps) or Jack Collison (West Ham, 22, seven Wales caps). True, the England bar is higher - Cahill would surely have ambled into any other Home Nation defence long before he wore the lions – but that only helps the prestige.

And yon profile/prestige is not just an intangible because it clearly affects sponsorship income, for player and team. Despite recent troubles Ryan Giggs is worth £27m - imagine how much higher that would be if he'd been playing for England's much-watched flowers every other summer (McClaren notwithstanding). For comparison, the half-decade younger Rio Ferdinand is worth £34m, while the fairly publicity-shy Sol Campbell is worth £31m – and can you recall a single ad campaign he's featured in?

The Rags caught this trend early in the last decade, buying England's brightest young stars after every tournament. After WC 2002 they bought Rio (then 23) for a fairly gobsmacking £30m, which now seems worth it. After Euro 2004 they spent £20m on the teenage Rooney, and again you can't deny the value. After WC 2006 they tried again with Michael Carrick (24, £18.6m) – not in the same league but trumpeted by some, especially Fergie's old mate Alan Hansen, as England's midfield future. They haven't done the same since - maybe because England didn't qualify for Euro 2008 and didn't turn up at WC 2010 - but you wouldn't bet against it; they were after Henderson earlier in the season...

Fair points but like much around that club, the truth about Aquilani is rather calmer than the hysteria. Opta have pointed out that he has as many Premier League assists since 1 Jan 2010 as Gareth Bale (six), and that in his one season at Liverpool (2010/11) he set up a goal every 136 minutes - the best rate in the top five European leagues. Mind you, one of them was an assist for Dirk Kuyt against us, so it probably shouldn't count.
