Hear, hear! It always angers me how small mars bars are.
Today (well this week) I'm furious with schools, my two nephews go to different schools, (one primary, one secondry), and have two different weeks for half term!! How stupid! And I've had to take this week off to look after one of them as my sister took last week off! And six year old boys seize to be sweet when you have to look after them full time for 4 days...

Or £7.70 a year, which, if you're in Yemen waiting for the Royal Marines to rescue you, you'd probably think was remarkably good value.
I've just renewed my UK passport. Since the last time I renewed they have decided the High Commission in Canada cannot do it and I have to apply through the UK Embassy in Washington (this is true for any country in the Americas or Caribbean). The renewal price was US $225. 77 quid sound like a bargain.

You could try keeping ducks. My drake, Thierry, cornered my dog (who's medium sized, far from small) down the side of the garage and wouldn't let him out once and now Milo doesn't dare go in their part of the garden...

Today i'm angry about the price of Chocolate bars. They're so much more expensive when i was a kid!
You've given a name....to a duck....

Agree on the chocolate though - thank god for Home Bargains

Southerners baffle me, they really do. Get them within a mile of a meadow and they all think they're living in The Good Life.

I was around when 'penny chews' were a penny ! How about that ! Indeed individual black-jacks, or fruit salads were 4 for a penny.

(By the way ... a penny was 1d, not 1p.)

Just wait till Tango get's onto this point.

Now then, just to put this sweets/chocolate/goodies thingy in perspective, based on the primary school tuck shop:

A small spanish stick was a halfpenny and kaylie was a penny a paper cone. Coltsfoot rook or Liquorice roots were two for a penny and brown bombers four for a penny. Horlicks tablets, two a penny. Toffees from jars were usually six pence or seven pence a quarter pound (we only ever bought two ounces) , and bars of Cadbury's chocolate sixpence and a shilling (twelve old pence). Ice lollies, square, and made from Vimto were one or two pence depending on size. Milk lollies (milk and vimto mixed) were two pence and three pence. Nobody bought chocolate at our school (unless you wanted a thumped earhole and robbing), that was weekend home stuff. Tins of Tic Tacs were two pence. Cough candy was sold in two ounce bags for three pence.

Now form an orderly queue and make sure you close the door on your way out.

Note for Bish: Groats, guineas and stuff were for the very rich and only ever seen in landlords/rent-collectors posession on occasions when they came unexpectedly before you could lock the door and pretend you weren't in.

Note for chocolate eaters: Don't despair. Shop around. The wife got three bars of Fry's peppermint cream on offer in Asda yesterday for 50p. That's value.
Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos?

Something's gotta give here - either you fork out for a new passport and get out, or fork out for some heating so you can stay in. Tough decisions.......

What ya gonna do Raven?! Come for a cuppa with me, my house is nice and warm and you don't need a passport! ;)

Kali, apparently, the 'proper' spelling, along with rainbow crystals were to be eaten off a bassets liquorish stich a bit like a cricket bat .... or your finger. They still exist but appear to be 12p, not 1d as they were. Posh kids used spoons.

After 2 oz of said kali your tongue & roof of mouth were cracked. If it was rainbow crystals then the mouth would be a strange multi-colour too.

The very, very, very best was some brittle toffee thingy on a tray that the shopkeeper broke with a small steel toffee hammer.

Pretend cigarettes too .... the posher chocolate ones wrapped in real cig paper and in packets effectively real copies of existing cigarettes ... Camel & Lucky Strike come to mind. Imagine that these days ... effectively 'training' kids to smoke !!

Anyway .... this is supposed to be an angry thread. I'd better get off my remenisences.

Old. Very old ... as old as time itself. (but younger than Zulu, who is 'pre-time').

OK, 53.

... & it changes to 'new pence' in 1971. We actually used to say "new pence" as well, for years & years after.
