Done some checking, this is true. Exempt as he did not attend High School.Beefheart wrote:I believe that being part of the FC Seoul set up Lee dropped out of middle school, and middle school dropouts aren't required to do national service.TKIZ! wrote:Does that mean that Lee will also have to do the same?
Park Chu Young is not though.
As long as the wind blows, fortunes can change.

Re: TKIZ's impossibly brilliant all new Transfer Rumours thr
Yeah, there's some outrage over the ludicrously low fee. This is a kid that was sent by his club (Chunnam Dragons) to Reading for a year as a youth to spend some time in their youth program. Even besides that, they have been nurturing him for a very long time. Now he has played just a year for them at the professional level and he looks set to leave for a pittance. There were rumors that Bayer Leverkeusen offered 5 million euros, but Ji wants to go to the EPL. The problem is that the salary that Old Bent Nose is offering to Ji is so much higher than what he is receiving in Korea, and the Korean club is getting the short end of the stick. I would love it if Coyle swooped in with a tidy ~1m pound bid and brought Ji to Bolton.LiOC wrote:Love the Korean commentators, sound so excited. £700k would be a bargain for him, I think. And we'd all love to get one over Steve BruceIl Pirate wrote:SonsOfThunder wrote:I think striker/winger Ji Dong Won should be considered. Here's the highlights from our recent friendly with Ghana. He's the tall #9. He had the opening goal and the winning assist in the game, playing from the LW position. His natural position is striker though. You can catch glimpses of Ki from Celtic and Park from Monaco as well. And of course the resident Korean at Bolton, Lee, who generally looked tired and ready to start his summer vacation already!

Steve Bruce is currently set to snap him up for 700k GBP. Unfortunate, because most have valued him around the 2 million mark (much like LCY), but it also makes it easy for Coyle to beat the offer and still look tempting.
edit: You guys are used to screaming Korean commentators by now, right?
I like your info & your tenacity. Keep posting.
And yes, though I can't speak for all, we are used to the Korean commentators. They make me laugh!
And I would love to bid higher for a player than Steve fat tw*t Bruce; for any player, just to see his fat moaning mug complaining his target had been 'tapped up, by a bigger club'. Even if that player spent their entire Bolton career selling programmes in the car park.
The military service issue though is big. He's 25, if I'm not mistaken so we could have him for 3 before he has to take them, yeah?
Also, Ji Dong Won just turned 20 last month. He's a very young kid with bags of potential. He has 11 full caps and 6 goals so far. Most of the goals came against weaker sides, but his goal and assist against Ghana hint at his ability against tougher sides. I think Park Chu Young (Monaco) was being referred to with the 25 comment, as Park is turning 26 this year.
There are some options regarding military service, which runs for two years. Exemption can be earned by medalling at the Olympics or the Asian Games (Olympic-style tournament, with same age restrictions and overage wild-cards allowed). The latest that one can serve in the army is 28 and football players can serve by playing in the Army's professional club, which plays in the Korean top flight. The alternative is to put the service off for two years and begin serving at the age of 30, but then the player must play for the National Police Team (I forget the official name) and they're basically a Sunday pub team from what I hear.
Now, if someone like Park Chu Young hits 28 and hasn't earned exemption, he can go directly to the Army club and spend his prime there, put it off for two years to prolong his stay in Europe and basically 'retire' when he enters the Police side, or forsake his Korean citizenship for the sake of his career. Park Chu Young will probably be the first Korean player to have to decide between the compulsory military service or playing in Europe's top leagues.
And yes, LCY is exempt because he dropped out of middle school to train full-time with FC Seoul. Koo Ja Cheol, another young Korean prospect that recently joined Wolfsburg for 2 million euros, only has to serve 6 months because his father is some war hero. Everyone else has the 2-year service looming over the horizon.

It's an interesting issue. Didn't ji sung at man u get ruled out because of achievement with the national squad? Is that a future possibility?

He was part of the 2002 squad that gained exemption. We haven't won any Olympic or Asian Games medals since, and advancing past the group stage in South Africa didn't count since they had changed the rule in 2007.LiOC wrote:Yeah the 25 was me getting confused with park chu young

HAHA, it's not often a Premier League chairman goes out of his way to deny a bullshit transfer rumour.
The "!!" is definitely a replacement for what he'd really like to have put there; "Jerome? Are you taking the fecking piss?"

According to The Mirror we have bid for Thiago Alcantara from Barca. I know it was mentioned on the other thread but it should be in this one.

Bolton have made a stunning £5million bid for Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara.
The Trotters have put in the biggest cash offer for the Spanish under-20 midfielder.
Italian Alcantara was offered to Arsenal this week in part exchange for Cesc Fabregas.
Barca will sell Alcantara and have also offered him to Udinese and are trying to involve him in other transfers with Spanish sides as they wheel and deal.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

Gardner to West Ham

"Board hoping to make one signing tomorrow (Fri, late evening, medical scheduled to end at 7pm) and one by the middle part of next week. A centre half and a left back.
Both with significant and lengthy Premier League experience - and both with a minimum of 24 months left in them at the top level. Second signing to be flown home from Jamaica so may drag a little."

I've just asked my Spanish speaking mate to translate the following on Thiago
http://www.mundodeportivo.com/20110607/ ... 43596.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Summary:
Half a dozen elite clubs want him.
Some offers have been loans.
Bolton's offer is so ridiculous that it hasn't even been considered.
Guardiola wants him to be there next season but if they get a good offer they'll think about it, although theyre not expecting such an offer to come in.

It mentions only a ridiculously big offer would be considered, but they dont expect such an offer to come, and he is a big part of Barca's plans for next season - Barcelona arent touting him about because they dont want him to go.Athers wrote:I've just asked my Spanish speaking mate to translate the following on Thiago
