The question is is our need to sell greater than their need to buy. If we manage to sell Cahill anytime soon then we'll have funds to play with and can afford to argue over £1m over Al Habsi. I do think Wigan will stump up the £4m for a player because I don't think they have much alternative. He played a big part in keeping them up last year so I think theywould struggle without him (perhaps a reason not to sell!)

Wigan can find another keeper if they have to.

Personally right now be it Cahill or Habsi or whoever, the signs coming out from the club is that we are more desperate to sell than anyone is to buy!

We should stick to our guns over Ali and Cahill at least at this point. Sure it is a dangerous game but if we crack and sell players under their market value, in future teams will always try to low ball us assuming we are desparate. Personally I think 4m for Ali to Wigan is a fair price.

Hey it's only my opinion, but are you trying to say it hasn't once crossed Eddie's mind how hard he needs to stick to his guns regarding the sale price of any particular player? Anyway go get your morning cup of coffee, it always works for me.

Actually I think our handling of players contracts has been a bit naff leaving us open to the parasite, scumbag, arsehole agents seeing the players are usually a bit 3x2!!!

Jeez BWFCi, I'd hate to be sat next to you when a fire alarm goes off – or for that matter have you on my side in negotiations. We get it fella, what you're "hearing" from "inside" the "club" is that we need to know how much money we have before we start spending. Funny how they've not yet grabbed the phone and gabbled "yesalrightthenmisterwhelanwhateveryousaysir" innit?

Ha. No panic here. My point was that in any negotiation there are two sides that have to understand what their fall back options are. In Wigans case their fall back is go after another keeper.

In our case its try and sell Al Habsi elsewhere I imagine.

We probably and I'm guessing here, but probably have more at stake than Wigan do in the deal. Therefore its more in our interests to make it happen rather than say "thats our price, pay or go away". Thats not good negotiating when there is a positive result achievable for both sides!

I think it's really great from Whelan "accusing" us of hiking our price/valuation on Al Habsi.

This is after him bidding below the price he was quoted 12 months ago and eventually upping his offer to the price he was quoted 12 months ago (£3m).

So Dave, it's fine for you to offer less than we asked for 12 months ago, but then it's not fine for us to change our valuation when you eventually offer what we were looking for 12 months ago...

Without knowing all the facts who can say what you'd do? But the point of a negotiation is that a side starts with an offer the other considers it, usually rejects it, or puts a counter offer in and then eventually a satisfactory point is reached.

It is rare for it to be successful if one side digs its heels in completely.

Whelan is a bit of a cock to rake all this up in public and of course we have every right to hike the price if we want to. What was the price a year ago doesn't necessarily mean thats the case now.

My point is (and I'm speculating) that this is not a case of "we'll sell him if we get the amount we want but otherwise we'll happily keep him" because like with Cahill we want the money to improve upon our dads army strike force primarily. So we're not necessarily in as strong a position as some peoples responses are making out and Wigan will know this too.

For me the worst thing would be both sides playing hardball and Al Habsi moving for 4M on 31st August. That result would be worse than taking 3M now. Not advocating taking 3M now at all. Just saying really.

I don't think we've more at steak than them.
They need a keeper.
They specifically want Al Habsi; y'know, what with him being their player of the season and all.
They maybe would've been relegated if he hadn't been there.
They are owned by a senile old doddering cockend.

Worst case for us is we pay his wages for another year. Something we committed ourselves to anyway when we offered him his contract.
Businesswoman of the year.

I agree. so (not knowing all the facts) - explain - how is it that you know enough to be satisfied that we have "dug our heels in completely"?

And Coyle has £0 to spend and our strikeforce consists of Robbie Blake, Kevin Davies, Ivan Klasnic and David Nugent.
Wigan will go and find another keeper.

Bish I'm not saying we have, I was just taking the general drift of people on here saying we should demand "4M and not a penny less" or some saying we should now "raise the price to 5M" and giving my opinion on the peril of such an approach!
