I've just made scrambled eggs for the first time in my life (I usually stick to omelettes) with a decent degree of success - I started folding slightly too late, I think...

My question is - is it acceptable to grate cheese into the pre-cooked egg mix, and is there anything else in the average student's (bare) kitchen that you can stick in to improve the quality?

Cheese with scrambled eggs will split opinion no doubt. I love it and after all its not much different to an omlette. I find adding the cheese halfway through cooking works best but it can happily go in at the start in my experience.

Cheese and ham is also nice, as are mushrooms and peppers. Pretty much anything you'd put in an omlette you can do in scrambled eggs and it'll be nice IMO!

Curry? Can't beat the Lal Hawelli in Rusholme for me, although a recent walk to The Lime Lounge in Cleveleys found me eating the best South Asian food I've had for a long time. Well worth a ride out.

cant advise on that, the thought of drinking red wine with an indian makes me a bit queasy! they do a decent pint of lager tho?

A glass of Priorat. With a whopping 14.5% abv, I was a little sceptical. Its very nice, and wears the alcohol well. But I have a feeling I'll have a bit of a thick head in the morning.

Tonight at the City Cafe in the Mint Hotel in Manchester. It was a birthday do, and i was feeling a little cautious after reading a real mixed bag of reviews online...

Was seriously good...

The evening meal deal was £19.00 for two courses and including a half bottle of wine each...

So, our four decided starters of chicken terrine (mine - delicious)... Sage risotto (not sure I have the name correct here - but delicious, I had a taste)... Smoked salmon salad... and Prawn Cocktail like for real, with every layer offering a different taste (and, allegedly, excellent)...

Mains... two chose a lamb dish that had two elements... trad roast lamb, pink inside, looked great, and miniature shepherds pie... both, but esp the latter, reported as excellent... Partner and I had the daily special of hake with sliced potatoes... Delicious...

Wine - non meat eaters had a muscadet, perfect, carnivores a french red, can't remember its denomination, but tasted it and v good...

We did loads of sides and afters and all (twas a birthday) inc cheese and dessert wines...

Worked out at about £35 a head... For a special event, pretty ok.... Four stars for food and service... Well done them...

I love the City Cafe, I often end up there for family birthdays, mothers day etc. The "2 or 3 courses for" set menus are really good value. A la carte is as pricey as you'd expect in a city centre restaurant, but worth it.

Always find the atmosphere hit and miss, and they've a horrid habit of trying to put the only two tables in the restaurant next to each other, but the food is very decent.

They have one in Leeds too, and the decor and atmosphere is a bit darker and intimate. Really like the Leeds one

Speaking of ham, this lunch involved a walk round Entwistle reservoir which ended in an inevitable trip to the Strawbury Duck where I troughed one of their ham and mustard sandwiches and a side of chunky chips.
