[History] Nickname-question
Hi Guys,
My name is Derk Lucas, I am from Holland and I had a question about the Wanderers.
A friend and I are hosting a footballquiz and we found something about a nickname Bolton got after they won their 3rd FA Cup in the 20's. Can you guys tell me what the nickname was because I can't find any information about it.
It will surely help a lot
Thanks in Advance
Derk

Re: [History] Nickname-question
Hi Derk,
Sorry about that. Not sure I know of a specific 'era nickname' (eg Cruyff's Barcelona "Dream Team") given to that successful 1920s era. The team's nickname has more or less always been The Trotters, a somewhat mysterious name thought to derive from street hustlers – the type who these days, and probably for centuries before, do cup-and-ball tricks on folding tables and run at the first sight of trouble... Not the most flattering of nicknames but at least it's interesting!
Good luck and thanks for coming by

Re: [History] Nickname-question
I seem to remember reading that they got a nickname following the third FA Cup win, but can't recall it. Something like the Triennials. I'll have to have a long think.

Rings a bell that Monty, sure I've read the same (or similar) somewhere.

1929 v Portsmouth, Monty? It was known, I believe, for a while as the '12 minute' Cup in some of the press - a reference to Bolton's first goal which was scored about that length of time before full-time. We scored another one for a 2-0 result.

Re: [History] Nickname-question
An obvious one after winning our third one of the decade might have been to call us the 'Cup Kings' , but that apart, i dont recall any other lasting nickname.

I thought Trotters came from Trotting - a term used by Boltonians playing tricks on out of towners (or something like that)

Or our propensity for pork products.
I'm sure Mr They Think Its All Over mentions it on the End Of An Era video. (yes, video. It was the end of an era, after all).

I always thought that both "Trotters" and "Wanderers" were derived from our nomadic existence when we were but a newborn team, Wandering or Trotting from ground to ground, until we settled upon a plot of land adjacent to Manny Road...Raven wrote:I thought Trotters came from Trotting - a term used by Boltonians playing tricks on out of towners (or something like that)
Re: [History] Nickname-question
I thought "Trotters" was to do with a location of our ground, near pig pens, where balls would often end up...

This comes up periodically, and all it goes to show is that none of us actually know.

Yeah that's what I always thought. Although, I guess the suggestion that it concerns our love of pork could work too...truewhite15 wrote:I always thought that both "Trotters" and "Wanderers" were derived from our nomadic existence when we were but a newborn team, Wandering or Trotting from ground to ground, until we settled upon a plot of land adjacent to Manny Road...Raven wrote:I thought Trotters came from Trotting - a term used by Boltonians playing tricks on out of towners (or something like that)

My dad always reckoned that the nickname came from "Bolton train on trotters and play tripe " !! Not sure I ever believed him - well the first bit anyway !!cecil.bob wrote:Yeah that's what I always thought. I thought it was from the fact that we didn't have our own ground for the first few years of the club's existence and "trotted" from place to place until finally settling at Pikes Lane.

Re: [History] Nickname-question
All the posts have relevance, but various websites give different explanations.
I don't think any one really knows the answer, Ground near Pig farm and ball in stys, Shop outside ground selling trotters where the players celebrated, Nomadic existance, Tricks on strangers, all part of the charm of our wonderful club.

Re: [History] Nickname-question
Perfectly true; when I was a kid there was a tripe shop on Halliwell Road. It was called Potters and sold trotters. Just thought I'd mention it.

The name was chosen as the club initially had a lot of difficulty finding a permanent ground to play on, having used three venues in its first four years of existence.
