The Anglo Italian Cup

Post by P.O.S. » Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:55 pm

Bit of a random subject but something different from the usual mid-summer transfer related stuff at least.

I saw this prestigious old competition mentioned on another forum with a Notts County fan proudly going on about their magnificent victory in one of the finals at Wembley in the mid 90's and it made me wonder if anyone from here went out to any of our away trips when we were involved in it, I know we played in Pisa but not sure where else we might have got to. What were those trips like and did many Bolton fans make the journeys?

Hard to imagine now with fixture congestion the way it is that lower league teams used to find time and space to head to Italy mid-week or vice-versa to play these matches

My old man went to Pisa and had a few good stories from it.

Always bangs on about walking into Manchester Airport and the bar being wall to wall red/blue Bolton away shirts.

And the fact England were playing San Marino, or somert like that. And a few England fans decided to head over to watch us. Some Man Utd fan took his jumper off and revealed his shirt. Got a kicking.

S'what I got told. As reliable as an LL transfer rumour

We played 2 away games iirc. 1 in Pisa and I'm not sure of the other away game. Possibly Piacenza? Seagraves scored an equaliser in a 1-1 draw in one of them.

Home games were a 5-0 tonking of Ancona and an entertaining 3-3 draw with Brescia for whom Georghi Hagi  was pulling the strings in midfield.

Think your right HRG, I seem to recall that too. I'm now thinking we played Ancona & Ascoli so perhaps not Piacenza

Think so, my dad mentioned it, along with some sort of u-turn on a penalty decision.

Didn't jimmy Phillips score a few? I always remember saying he was our top European goalscorer as a yoof.

Went to both home games.

Stand out memories are the keeper of one of the teams making a fantastic flying save....from a shot that was going about 5 yards wide and a yard over. And Branagan doing keepeups and Didsy dancing in front of the Burnden Paddock to "f*ck off Cantona, said we've got David Lee" on a long injury break.

It was 1993/94. We played Ancona Home 5 0 (Mcginley 2, Mcateer, A Thompson, J Phillips), Brescia Home 3 3 (Coyle, McGinley, Green), Pisa Away 1 1 (J Phillips), Ascoli away 1 1 (Seagraves). That was after qualifying, Tranmere away 1 2( McGinley, Coyle) and Sunderland Home 2 0 (Coyle 2).

Wasn't that (Tranmere) the game where Bruce threatened to sell the entire first team except Aidan Davison because he thought they were collectively shite?

I pressed people on the forum I originally saw the subject for some more memories - one Portsmouth fan said they once ended up at Napoli's 60,000 all seater stadium... 400 of them in an 800-strong crowd, but they loved it.

Another one said he'd never forget this scoreline from the Olympic Stadium and his trip there: Roma 2-3 Carlisle.

Brilliant!

When you think about it now, it was such a strange competition.

When we thought about it then, it was pretty bizarre.
