But the people at Citeh advocating the Cahill deal have been sidelined apparently so its not happening.

We're now left with penny pinching dithering old fool Wenger, and "sell my granny for a tenner and buy Papa Bouba Diop with it" Redknapp to do any deal with!
not discussing transfer speculation are you, BWFCi?
I never said I wouldn't. Its fun. Its just soooo quiet this summer the thread hasn't even got the usual juicy rumours to sustain it. Perhaps we need some people to spot SWP going into poundland or sommat to keep it going!

Funny you mention that, I did see a black midget in Home Bargains this morning, might have been him, might have been Gary Coleman (zombie version).

Said it before, but if OC wants to get full value for Cahill he should make a mention of offering him a new contract round about now. If he doesn't go and Cahill opts to run his contract out we'll lose out big style at season end. It might at least prompt some action from those who are obviouly playing waiting games hoping to call his bluff. One way or another we need to avoid one of our best players going to the money clubs on a free at all costs.

There is one MAHOOOOSIVE problem with that. Persuading Gaz that he wants to sign a new contract. I can't see any benefit for him to do so right now.

I've no doubt he'd sign without hesitation if we offered him another 10k a week. Oh, hang on.....

Yep but I'd say he'd back his chances of attracting a suitor as a freebie next summer!

Another problem: "Coyle has offered his star defender a new contract but sources close to Cahill say he's looking for a new start" etc

Cahill wants to play for a big club. Fact.
Coyle won't stand in his way but wants a decent selling price. Fact.
Clubs show interest but want to get him as cheap as possible. Good for them, not god for us. Fact.
Manager has chat with Cahill, puts out noises about new contract (which may well happen if no one pays the price) with a bit of player cooperation, to move things along and either somebody moves in to buy, negotiate or we keep the player and have a good central defender for the season, ( in which case we may have to negotiate new terms anyway). What's lost with a bit of tactical pretence?

We've said we wnat the money and hawked him all over the shop. Seeing as he wants to leave, everyone is balking at the price, and he has one year left on his contract, I don't see how its to his benefit to sign a new deal, or even be seen to be considering a new deal.

The only possible angle is security if no-one makes a firm approach by August the 31st. But then he's able to talk to clubs in January, so he'll probably take the risk.

He'll be free to speak to Foreign clubs in January. Not English ones

I thought they'd changed the rules where you can no longer sign the 6 month advance contract?

Is that just for English clubs then? They can't sign pre-contracts with other English players?

Thats not how it works TD. If Cahill wants to leave and his agent knows, he will simply make it known that Cahill is not prepared to sign a new deal.

Clubs might not take Cahill for 17M but they may well be more interested on a free. I'm not saying Cahill wouldn't sign a new contract BUT there is nothing to say he will either. Nothing to stop him doing exactly what Elmander did. See his contract out and move on. Thats the delicate position.

Sadly Caps may well be right on this one. Time will tell. I think Coyle has been a bit naive in how he's handled this though the breakdown of the deal with City could not have been envisaged.

The only possible way we could get him on a new contract is with a lower release fee - and if he doesn't go this summer anything north of say £5m would be a slightly curious move on the part of Cahill and his agent.

yeah - too right - SirNut reliably informed us we should take nothing less than £25million.

If we sign Ronaldo Messi Villa Xavi Sneijder we'd probably come top 5. Great. Not gonna happen is it. Though it did come from someone who started his list of top left backs with Eric pissing Abidal.
abidal is quality we all know it as fact bud my point was there arent many top quality leftbacks so naming a top 3 of abidal evra and cole is to be honest pretty fair, Can you tell me someone currently playing better than those 3?

and your comment about us signing messi ronaldo xavi and sjneider is stupid its not ever gonna happen but it looks like fabregas and nasri leaving arsenholes is!
You're right they're quality but you're probably forgetting Coentrao and Capdevilla
---------------------------------

Abidal is gash. He isn't even the best left back at Barca. As is Capdevilla. Coentrao is good, Evra and Cole are miles ahead of everyone. Left backs better than Abidal include Evra, Cole, Coentrao, Maxwell, Marcelo, Lahm, Clichy, Kolarov, Bale, Me, You, Paul Robinson our left back, Paul Robinson the goal keeper, and Paul Robinson the owner of Lassiters'.

And you didn't say Fabregas and Nasri would leave Arsenal. You said they would leave and they wouldn't replace them, which is about as likely given the pressure on Wenger, as us signing Wesley and his mates.

-------------------------------

Sorry Keveh! Didn't want to start a new thread for that!

Anyway. Cahill-wise, IMO offering a new contract would do more harm than good as when he turned it down everyone would KNOW they could have him for free. Hopefully this Arsene pressure will make him panic, and we all know Droppy likes to spend pennies, and Spurs have previous for paying massive money for young and english.
