Crazy what leatherface is spending at Sunderland to make them at best ever so slightly better than last year.

We can only go off what Coyle says. He is getting the backing but is waiting for the right players. Whether that is the right strategy time will tell. Hopefully it will pay off short and long term!
Both points of view seem about right for me.

Less money after Big Sam, Little Sam and Ginger Sam spent it all, plus the global financial crisis has really started to kick in recently, past 18 months or so.

Coyle is waiting for the right players... awesome. I hope they want to play at the Reebok!

Elsewhere, someone was saying about the lack of cover. From the sides we put out last year there would be but maybe after summer-training/pre-season OC will have more confidence in one or two of the kids so that maybe they might get on the bench.

I don't want us to spend gazzillions and be a Portsmouth/Leeds/West Ham.
The players you fail to sign never lose you any money.

Still, damn close to 150 pages on here & one, count it ... one, signing.

I don't want or need us to do what Sunderland & Liverpool are doing, nor could we afford to, but I'd have thought we'd have had one or two lined up.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Loads of outgoings, one incoming on what appears to be low wages (as reported). We've no money.

There, I've said it. Someone had to.

You can take the piss out of Sunderland all you want, but O'Shea is a good signing.

That is not the story Coyle tells and I'll take his word over yours. He even did a bloody interview with the BN recently to clear up the situation. There is money there, Coyle is being cautious. As he has explained. We will judge him on that when the season starts. As he has said he could have signed half a dozen good players he has been offered already but decided weren't quite right!

Bolton boss Owen Coyle is ready to clinch a deal for Spanish starlet Rodrigo Moreno – after chairman Phil Gartside flew out for a summit meeting with his club, Benfica.

Coyle has been trying to bring exciting attacker Moreno back to the Reebok, but the Portuguese giants were reluctant to part with the Under-20 international.

However, Gartside travelled to Lisbon to meet Benfica officials face to face and is hopeful that he has now secured the youngster as Coyle’s second signing.

Bolton want to agree terms that would see Moreno come back to them on loan, but with a view to a permanent £3.4 million switch.
I had my doubts about this first time it was reported. But I'd actually him back. Coyle must think he is good enough, he's seen him day in, day out in training after all.
He continues to play Taylor and he sees him day in and day out so that judgement is shit
Who would you have played left wing last season then Potter? Petrov?

Like it's been said, Rodrigo was one of the best players on the park when I went down to Stamford Bridge around Christmas. He has an enormous amount of talent of potential. He did reasonably well last season considering he's a 19 year STRIKER who was played out of position, first year in England and couldn't speak the language.
Yes, Petrov. even thought he didn't perform every game, he did perform. Matty Taylor has been useless for the last 2 years at Bolton, can't beat a man, can't run, can't do nothing. Sell him !
You can count on one hand the amount of decent games Petrov had last season.

You're knowledge of football could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

We were unfortunate last season that we had two very, very poor left wingers. But I'd rather have a left winger who works his bollocks off and is actually interested in the game. The way we play, we can't afford the luxury of having Petrov just staying up one end of the pitch and not helping out by not tracking back, especially when we have a very poor left back too. Taylor isn't the best player in the world, but he tries his best and that is all you can ask of him.

When Petrov is on his game, he's a far superior player to Taylor. Despite the hyperbole, he had a few decent ones last year, in the first half of the season, where he was instrumental in the result.

Its a moot point as to how many times he's on his game, because I can't remember any games where Taylor was instrumental. Indeed, my hunch would be that results dipped when he replaced the Bulgarian.

In short, Taylor cannot play in a 4-4-2. The only way we can accomodate him is if we change our formation. I'm not sure why you'd do that for a work-a-day left midfielder. No-ones ripping up trees, but lets not kid ourselves that because one dissapointed the other provided anything.

That would be all well and good if the only aspect of football was attacking.

What a load of bollocks. Let's not bother playing defenders then. Blake at right back? Sure he can't tackle but he does score the odd screamer. Petrov is a liability capable of occasional brilliance going forward, but who offers, literally offers, nothing at all defensively. Taylor is shite going forward in open play, capable of a good dead ball, and works hard defensively. Neither are good enough IMO, but to say it's all right for Petrov to but in no effort tracking back, to give the ball away consistently in dangerous areas, just because he had the odd game where he looked dangerous is balls.

I can't think of many games Petrov had a massive influence over. End of the day in the system we play workrate and getting up and down the pitch are far more important than the odd bit of flair you may produce. Neither Taylor nor Petrov are perfect. But Taylor at least provides some balance to the side when we've not got the ball. If Petrov wants to be first choice again he has to show more desire and greater workrate.

Well if you are going to win it's a pretty good idea to start with not losing. You can't justify the inclusion of Petrov with flippant throw away comments alone. Of course you need players who make a difference going forward, but occasionally doing that, and that alone cannot be enough. My preference of the two would be Taylor, but only just. He is poor to Petrov's shite. He offers far, far more defensively, although next to nothing going forwards.

Again, giving the oppo something to worry about can bring about its own benefits. One of our major downfalls during the Ginger Era was a recalcitrance to attack or take the game to other teams. We thus invited immense and sustained pressure upon our own goal. Under those circumstances, a player like Taylor was ideal.Unfortunately, because we don't have a City-style backer, there is a balance to be struck. We have to provide some threat to the other team. So we either rvert in to our shells, or accept the downside of having a sprinkling of stardust players.

I thought this last season, despite its poor finish, provided a light-years worth of entertainment compared to the previous approach. Thats because sometimes we took risks. They won't always pay off. In our situation, risk won't always equal reward, but neither will a fear of failure.
