At the end of it all we're still Bolton. We're a decent side. Good mid-table finish and some cup runs is never beyond us whoever we sign. It's a Bolton thing. Have all the others suddenly become Barcelona in the off season? We'll do fine. I'll get it in early.

Can't be Sir Nut - there's no mention of Kevin Davies.

I'm with TKIZ on this and would prefer to see how these players fit in to our system and style of play before making a judgement.

The author strikes me as one of those who would not be happy with anything less than marquee signings. Given our financial position we are more likely to be signing players with potentail in the 0 - £5m range with the Championship, Europe, Asia and the US as hunting grounds rather than the PL. For some this will never be good enough.

Coyle was talking up the fee agreed for Taylor

'a great deal for a player entering the last year of his contract'

Tis my view that we've overpaid for these two if it is, as reported, 3 million quid!

And Skysports are confirming that NRC's in Bolton for talks...

So that'd be Jeffren, Pratley, NRC, Mears, Eagles in - with (hopefully, and IMHO) a couple of other players still to come; a striker at least, surely.

And Elmander, JoB, Samuel, Al Habsi, Cohen, Ward, and Taylor (who SSN is reporting has agreed his move to BWFCLite) out. Given that we've been woefully short on numbers recently, that makes us 2 short on last season, when we declared that we wanted to increase the size of the squad. So maybe, when Coyle says that he's looking at 3/4 new players, he means 3/4 new players ON TOP OF the ones named above...?

I don't know, I think that's quite a good price for the two.

Not sure what Mears is going to give us, apart from more backup, but Eagles definitely has something to offer and is the type of player who can come on and make an impact.

A difference of just over £500,000 between getting rid of Taylor and bringing in Mears/Eagles. Very good business.

Yea this could be a good deal. Hopefully bringing Mears in will give Steinsson a kick up the backside and we will no longer have to play Robbo on the right, while Eagles could be a very good back-up for Chungy. 800,000 for these two more than a solitary Matty Taylor doesn't seem bad business at all for me.

I'd imagine there's quite a difference in wages too?

Pratley and Reo Coker on a free brilliant business. Mears and Eagles for $3m good price. Selling a slow, glandular-fevered 30-year-old Taylor for $2.2 also excellent business. Re-signing Sturridge on a yearlong loan PRICELESS.

Coyle's going great guns. Eagles can play both sides. We can sell Savis and lowball Steinsson on his next contract if we keep him. Maybe sell Muamba and Cahill and buy Sturridge outright for $20m?

Agree I think its a great piece of business from Owen Coyle (almost a straight swap of Taylor for these two), I've not seen enough of Mears to pass an opinion but he must be as good if not even slightly better than Steinsson & Robinson, but I like Eagles because he's a player who's comfortable on the ball who can pass & move....with Holden, Pratley, Eagles, Chung Lee, Petrov, M Davies & possibly Reo Coker we would have loads of options in midfield and all are comfortable on the ball and can all pass the ball well.

I also think bringing in Eagles will mean that OC is now looking at playing a more on the deck, passing, high tempo game, putting his own stamp on the team in terms of his players & his style. I'm really hoping Reo Coker signs though as I think he is just the type of competitive player we need to improve us....

OC just now needs to fully concentrate on bringing in that quality pacy striker who is good enough to get a 1st team place straight away.

Aye - not seen anyone say good luck to them. All saying Mears is shit despite playing there 2 seasons, one of which he was player of the year.

Potential squad
Bold are possibilities. Italics are injured or endangered

GK: Jussi, Bogdan
RB: Steinsson, Ricketts , Mears
LB: Robinson, Alonso,
CB: Knight, Onohua
CB: Cahill, Wheater
DM: Muamba, Savis, Pratley,
CM: Holden,ReoCoker , M. Davies,
RW: Lee, Eagles
LW: Petrov, Jeffren, Gardner
ST: SKD, Eaves,
ST: Sturridge, Klasnic, Blake

Good squad if those players pan out. Maybe we need to shift one or two of the midfielders or maybe one and Cahill to get under the 25. How old is Bogdan? Eaves?
