Why is that oft the answer if someone criticises BWFC?ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Some of you have had it too good for too long.

We should be thankful for the likes of Mears and Eagles because they're better than Nicky Spooner and Paul Compstive

2 seasons back when Coyle took over here, there was a clamour for him to sign those players.Anton Fingers wrote:Mears and Eagles would fit well into a team playing high energy / tempo footballBWFC_Insane wrote:CAPSLOCK wrote:From Jeffren and Sturridge to Ngog, Mears and Eagles...fcuk me
And worst of all, I'm not surprised
Coyle wants a team playing a high tempo, high energy, high pace game, at the very least he is going for the sort of players who might have a chance of doing that, which I feel he did the very opposite of last season in Petrov and Klasnic. Fine for a certain way of playing but not the high tempo 4-4-2 he wants to play.
In the Championship
Don't remember so many folk turning their noses up at them. Thing is IF we had a squad of 20 senior outfield fit players I'd agree with you that there would be no point signing Eagles and Mears. But we're where we are, unable to fill a bench in the premiership. And there are two of the better championship players who if we can agree terms with we can have for 3M. They are also players our current manager wants, and knows, and they understand how he wants to play.
Who exactly would you suggest we sign to plug the gaps in the squad, bearing in mind we aren't going to be spending 30M this or any summer?

Put it this way, on here and other forums there were a fair few who mentioned signing Eagles and to a lesser extent Mears.thebish wrote:was there?? or are you making that up?BWFC_Insane wrote: 2 seasons back when Coyle took over here, there was a clamour for him to sign those players.
To be honest I'm really not sure who Coyle could sign that would lead to universal approval.
I just hope he signs a fair few because as it stands we're woefully short.
Eagles, Mears, Reo Coker, Ngog would all improve us as it stands now, whether they are the "sort" of players you'd prefer us to sign or not.

Not forgetting that it's a "Championship player" who forms our only signing thus far, and who has, by all accounts, stood out head and shoulders above the rest of our midfield.BWFC_Insane wrote:2 seasons back when Coyle took over here, there was a clamour for him to sign those players.Anton Fingers wrote:Mears and Eagles would fit well into a team playing high energy / tempo footballBWFC_Insane wrote:CAPSLOCK wrote:From Jeffren and Sturridge to Ngog, Mears and Eagles...fcuk me

Going after players from bigger clubs and bigger players in general, there's always the chance they wont go for us, maybe even nine times out of ten. Seems we start big and have fall-back options, as players themselves do. I supsect we're in fall-back position at the moment with Eagles (SWP), NGog (Suarez), Mears (Levels). These things happen with a club like ours.

Primarily because we a) know he can score goals in this league.
b) He's actually an out and out striker as opposed to someone who plays in an entirely different way, in a different system in a different country, who has hardly played any "proper" football at the age of 23!

Re: TKIZ's impossibly brilliant all new Transfer Rumours thr
This isn't about Premiership / Championship snobbery (alone)
For example, Pratley is different; Swansea were promoted and until his contract situation affected him / his standing, he was their brightest prospect. And we still don't know if he'll make the step up
If Mears and Eagles were stand out performers in a very good Championship side then I'd say fair enough too, but they're inconsistent and part of a team that was not only relegated but failed to really impact the Championship last season - they were 8 points off the play offs IIRC
It's ok filling the squad, but that in isolation is rather worrying; it's well documented that we don't have oodles of cash, so £3m on squad fillers to replace... (other squad fillers that have left us?) fills me with dread......

It doesn't work out as neatly as "I'd like a then b then c, then d if we can't get a etc..."ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Just saying...i dont think OC shared the same view.BWFC_Insane wrote:I'd rather sign NGog then Jeffren.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Going after players from bigger clubs and bigger players in general, there's always the chance they wont go for us, maybe even nine times out of ten. Bids go in as and when players are available and clubs are prepared to talk.
Coyle has been after Eagles and Mears since he left Burnley, but its this point that they've told Burnley they won't sign a new deal and Burnley are in the position of needing to sell them before they get nowt for them.
Last season for example, we got Sturridge because Vela went to West Brom instead. Had we signed Vela we'd not have signed Sturridge. But its not the case that Vela was "1st choice" except in the sense that he was available we didn't get him, Sturridge became available we did get him.....when Vela was in the picture Chelsea still hadn't decided what they wanted to do with Sturridge!

Indeed but for all you know it could be that he focussed on Jeffren until NGog came up, and then decided he'd rather have NGog. It may be that there is still a chance with Jeffren but since NGog came up Coyle would rather focus his money on that.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:He has priorities, i'm not having that that's not the case.
Oh and we've not made any bid or approach for SWP. We were only going to look at a loan possibility later in the summer, if he was still available and Citeh couldn't shift him elsewhere. So I don't think anyone is a backup plan to SWP!

A club of our size has to look for rough diamonds, players at the end of their contracts or people who for any of a variety of reasons have something to prove.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Going after players from bigger clubs and bigger players in general, there's always the chance they wont go for us, maybe even nine times out of ten. It's just how it is.
Our part of the bargain is that we give them more care & attention and hope we can get the best from them.
That's why Villa & Spam, with on the face of it good enough squads, struggle to get performances out of the players. It's why HWSBN couldn't get performances from Barcelona's squad.

If thats the case it just always seems rather strange that we sign the players we're linked with later in the window with relative ease...BWFC_Insane wrote:Indeed but for all you know it could be that he focussed on Jeffren until NGog came up, and then decided he'd rather have NGog.
