You're right.

And whilst we're at it, what's Coyle doing about the Adebayor, Tevez and Schneider situations. eh?

Abso-fu-cking-lutely. A better player than that that we currently have in any position whatsoever isn't what we should be looking for? How come? :conf:

But how come after ten years (or so) we can't afford Joey Barton on a free? And we're fecking about with barely proven types?
How much is Barton on at the moment? 60K a week or thereabouts? I don't know - I'm just guessing.

Can we match that?

More pertinently, whilst he won't go to a top four club (not through lack of talent, but because of an excess of what, in modern parlance, is known as "baggage"), I suspect he'll get offers from the next tier. The likes of Spurs. I would say Liverpool, but they've already signed 8 billion midfielders, so probably not.

Villa, though - didn't our new midfielder say he was released from Villa because they wanted someone more creative? Barton fits that bill.

So, whilst I'd love to see us sign him, I suspect he'll go elsewhere, for more money.

Well, that's just a bit of prickishness on your part there. However, are you actually suggesting that we shouldn't be looking for better players than those that we currently have? Really? :conf:

No. I'm suggesting we haven't got the money for Joey Barton.

I'm pointing out that lots of better players would improve us. We can't afford them.

In short, to surmise, I'm saying, rather categorically, that we will not be signing Joey Barton.

He did say as much, he was on SkySports earlier tonight. Although the fact he didn't get "the lad" "quality" or "Barclays Premier League" in made me question whether it was really him or not. He saved himself at the end with "the football club".

He was smirking throughout- most likely because he knows us bringing in Joey Barton is as likely as us bringing in Messi. As Vinnie Mac says, no chance in hell.

OK, fair do's. Willie Mackay reckons that Barton's prepared to accept less than he's currently on in return for a longer contract. To think that we have to survive on the pick of Coyle's mates and the pick of the lower divisions doesn't bode well. I'm sure we're agreed on that. How come we're fecking about at these ends of the market though? We're squabling for players with newly promoted clubs? Sure, by now, we should be an automatic choice for the likes of Joey Barton?! :conf:

We could try and discuss that Bruce, but we'd end up opening old wounds about certain people spunking too much money on shite. And we'd have anarchy on our hands.

Safe to say we're in a period of having to lose the dross and get by as best we can.

True enough. However, ok, let's say that we are fishing around amongst the bottom feeders - how come, in the name of the blazes, are we not in for DJ Campbell? :conf:

I don't know. Maybe we were. Or more scarily, maybe every deal is sell to buy. Or a free.

Perhaps a week ago before we signed NRC we might have looked at someone like Barton. I suspect it would be one midfielder too many and the position isn't a priority any more.

Not sure if his potential off (and on!) field antics would be worth the risk of his talent and versatility.

My money is on it being because he's shite.... one half decent season as a professional doesn't a top signing make... See M Ricketts for that.

You are being over-the-top though. Tevez compared with Barton? Come on...

More importantly, you don't KNOW what money we could get Barton on, so ruling it out because he's CURRENTLY on "£60k" a week (again, how you know this for fact, unless you know Barton personally - in which case, have a word - I don't know) seems silly to me.

Players sometimes take wage cuts to play for a good manager, or to get regular football etc. Who knows, why not at least try? Barton seems on a crusade of late to show himself as a "new man", and taking a wage drop to play for a respected man-manager at a club that he'd shine in, would seem a good move to me.

I don't think we'll sign him though. Before Chungy got injured, we might have had a go, but now - nah.

Barton on a crusade? I think you've wandered off bish's thread.

The reason we will not be trying is that we won't have the money to compete. Otherwise, why not at least try to get Tevez, if its all about the trying?

why the hell do people want barton? By all accounts nolan was as good if not better than barton last season and we don't want him back. we have enough cm's that have good attitude without trying to bring in a tit who will happily fight with his team mates and cause trouble if things don't go his way, not to mention the fact that he has previously come out and said he is better than gerrard and lampard.....noob! I would take nrc and holden over him anyday. anyway rant over.

Thirteen goals, in a crap team, and not by workshy goal-hanging. Thirteen goals, available for £1.25m.

Even if there would be questions over his effect on the stability of the club, Barton would improve our team and squad tremendously. He did indeed play (and excel) wide right in Newcastle's 4-4-2 last season, and although you fancy Coyle would prefer a more orthodox winger, Barton is twice the player SWP is and four times Weiss. He would also, although it's not really needed now, offer a central midfield option far more creative than anything we have there at the moment.

It's entirely possible that we'd be outbid, but I'd be annoyed if we weren't at least asking the question.

Nice preview in the Guardian.. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog ... -wanderers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It ends with...
Above all, Coyle must find the right striker. Get that right and there should be no cause for concern. Get it wrong and 14th place will have to do just fine.

Not arguing about the price, but I stand by the fact he's not very good... Happy for QPR or Villa to take him on if it means we spend the extra £1m we'd spend on someone better... If we've not got anyone 5pm 31st Aug I may change my mind but until then a 30 year old who's not done much bar one season isn't high on my list.
