The TRUTH re Money
http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wa ... _to_spend/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Oh my, we really do have Arsene Wenger MkII in charge. Pretty definitive statements though. Coyle doing it his way. No problem with that. But if we are light in a department during the season then lets remember that's as a result of his methodology (which is probably right) rather than our "poor resources".“I've had debates with Phil before when I have a valuation of a player, and think it's fair, but he sometimes he is of the mind that if he's the one I want, we could pay and extra couple of million to make sure we get him,” he told The Bolton News. “But I won't have that.
“I intend to get value for money and want to do the best I can for the football club.
“To be fair to him, I love the fact he's prepared to back me. But I always feel there needs to be sense in the transfer market, and that's the way I go about it.
“If I think someone is worth £3m, I'm not paying £5m because I think that we as a club are being ripped off.”
“You never say never, but the way I would usually go about things, I wouldn't spend 11 million Euros on a player in his late twenties,” he said.
“It's up the manager at the time, the man charged with the job. I have to be careful about people getting misconceptions about the Scottish but I treat that money like it is my own.
“I have to get the best value because it's Eddie's money and he's made an unbelievable commitment to Bolton Wanderers, with Phil as the chairman.”
Re: The TRUTH re Money
The man shows sense and is realistic about a club like us, get them in young, develop them hopefully to our advantage, cash in and survive.
I trust him and if his ways work he'll be off to higher things eventually.

So from that full article today we can gauge that:
- We wont be buying Ngog
- We wont be buying Jerome
- We wont be buying SWP
- We might get Moreno on loan
Still doesnt sound to me the workings of a man being careful with money, but rather someone being told he has no money to spend.

Agreed. The transfer market doesn't work the way Coyle wants it to, and it's not going to change any time soon.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:So from that full article today we can gauge that:

Seems to contrast strangely with the bit of the article that's missing; the part where he says Eddie Davis and PG have said there are funds available. I'm still for wait and see.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:So from that full article today we can gauge that:

Re: The TRUTH re Money
What he's saying is he will pay only what he thinks a player is worth. He spells it out explicitly its exactly how Wenger operates and why they have only signed one player this summer and Arsenal fans are frustrated. On a lower level of course. But let's say Coyle has 8M to spend for arguments sake. And he wants NGog and values him at 3 but Liverpool want 6, the point he's making is that whilst we could pay 6 he won't because it wouldn't get him the best value. He's doing the exact opposite of Megson, who identified who he wanted and paid the price required to get them. Pratley a prime example we could have bought him two or three times in the past for several million, he's a player Coyle wanted but because Coyle wanted value for the deal we waited until either Swansea priced him at something Coyle agreed with or he was on a free. It's a different way of doing things to what weve been used to with Megson and to some extent Allardyce. End of the day might make for some frustrating times not getting certain players but equally the Jeffren bid shows that when he thinks the deal is right he is prepared to commit the money when appropriate.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:So from that full article today we can gauge that:

Wait and see til the last week of the season in other words, in case anyone drops their prices. Risky strategy and only usually results in loans for us.TANGODANCER wrote:Seems to contrast strangely with the bit of the article that's missing; the part where he says Eddie Davis and PG have said there are funds available. Re: The TRUTH re Money
What way does it work? Should we just go in and pay the first asking price regardless? Coyle has a job to do and part of it is to protect club funds. Supply always depends on demand and that only happens where value for money is concerned (except if you have mega rich owners who are determined success can be bought by pure top-spend., which unfortunately doesn't include Bolton Wanderers who are deeply in debt, something else that probably isn't going to change any time soon )Choppers wrote:

Re: The TRUTH re Money
Read what you want into Ngog, but this:ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Soooo....based on what you just said which part where i said 'we wont be buying Ngog' are you disagreeing with?
Well, how about:ohjimmyjimmy wrote:someone being told he has no money to spend
Course, there'll always be those who are convinced we've no money to spend. But I can't really see how anyone can hope to spin this story that way - or at least spin it and have anyone believe them.Owen Coyle said rather than wrote:“I've had debates with Phil before when I have a valuation of a player, and think it's fair, but he sometimes he is of the mind that if he's the one I want, we could pay and [sic] extra couple of million to make sure we get him. To be fair to him, I love the fact he's prepared to back me. But I always feel there needs to be sense in the transfer market, and that's the way I go about it. If I think someone is worth £3m, I'm not paying £5m because I think that we as a club are being ripped off. I treat that money like it is my own. Re: The TRUTH re Money
But there is a HUGE difference between not buying a player cos you can't afford him and not buying him because you think he's overpriced and not good value.ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Soooo....based on what you just said which part where i said 'we wont be buying Ngog' are you disagreeing with?
If Coyle thinks he's going for the right price then I'm sure he'll go for him if not then he won't. Surely in our position that's the right way to run the football club?
The balance is in making sure we don't leave ourselves too light and that's why we employ a manager to make those calls!
Edit and what DSB said.
By the way DSB did you write the 442 BWFC preview bit? It's unusually accurate!
Re: The TRUTH re Money
we can relax and wait for three new signings then - very shortly!

Re: The TRUTH re Money
Personally i would like to think that given our striker desperation and the huge financial implications that relegation would bring, that we wouldnt quibble over 1m one week before the start if the season, especiall given the start we have. A good manager such as OC should not just say naa he's only worth 3m im not paying 4m he should also think that he can develop and bring them on, so that as a resaleable asset he would have increased their value to at least what he paid for them. If its 3 or 4m out in price, well fine we but should in that case drop immediate interest and purse others actively within our budget, not wait til August 28th and ask liverpool again if they'll take 3m...thats insanity.
