Re: Here we go
They want to get Spurs game off as well. The last thing they'll be needing is for 3,000 Scoucers to pitch up!

May the bridges I burn light your way

As well as Spurs-Everton?
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Re: Here we go
No thanks Will. I don't want lectures about "Rage against the machine", and all that. I saw these two quotes in today's press:William the White wrote:I recognise that this is rhetorical but is it permitted to ask why you think it happened?TANGODANCER wrote:That leading section of the building has a date on the front of it. Saw a picture in one newspaper today, not sure if it was 1830? A fine piece of architecture ruined in a few hours by fxcking lunatics, and for what exactly?
"They're even burning the post office where they come to pick up their giros"
"We can't win. We're damned if we do, and damned if we don't" A police spokesman.
Explain then if you wish, why it happened, burning the building that is, which was my post's topic. Just tell me what that's about. Heat of the moment, I suppose if you'll pardon the unintentional pun.

Re: Here we go
Amazing night.
Imagine how scary Sparta would have been if the slaves had had social networking and mobiles.
Somehow, I found myself, with two other white people, walking through the main, long narrow shopping street at Clapham Junction that has featured heavily on the news. It was scary, not because people were doing anything other than smashing shops in and carting the stuff off (although I did wish I didn't have my laptop bag on me), but just because of the sheer lawlessness of it all and the fact that there wasn't a police officer in sight - as Bruce has quoted me saying, there's something particularly chilling about people raiding New Look!
So I walked from the station, up the high street towards Northcote Road, for anyone who knows the area, then turned left up Battersea Rise, where about 20-30 policemen were gathered about 300m up the road, looking absolutely terrified. The only thing that calmed things down on that street seems to have been the complete emptying of the shops with anything of any value. I wouldn't have fancied it in police uniform either, to be honest, in that narrow 'pass'... anything could have happened, and a few TVs, mobiles and trainers aren't worth that. I can report that, happily, Waterstones came through unscathed.
I'm sure people will try and make a partisan point out of this, but all I will say is that there are a lot of people out there who feel that they don't have a lot to lose.
Anyway, Diane Abbott has let herself go... http://www.twitvid.com/4JTZH" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Well said though.

Does anyone have the number for the Madrid police?
They wouldn't stand for any of this poncing about.

Have to say, I was listening to Theresa May on R5 this morning and she just came across as being completely out of her depth here. "I'm arranging a series of meetings with Chief Constables to see what they need". Dear God! Try water cannons and the military, Love! Meetings adjourned.

I heard that... to every question she simply answered "It's sheer criminality..." (my guess is that that is the soundbite for the day..)
still, never mind - she buys jimmy choo shoes and declared the end of the "nasty party".. I'm sure Dave will be along soon to hug a hoodie...

I listened to TalkSport this morning to see how they responded, and it was genuinely frightening to hear that gimp Irani and that utter cretin Brazil rabbit on about how they 'should be locked up for five years, and I mean five years, bang, whoosh, no messin aboot'.

Re: Here we go (aka UK riots thread)
Some silly cow on 5 live this morning suggested turning twitter off this evening to stop the gangs communicating with each other and so prevent further riots tonight.
Yeah, cos that's the real problem here. Social networking.

Yeah, cos that's the real problem here. Social networking.

once upon a time it was "Rioters are communicating with mobile phones" now it's the fault of the dirty FACEBOOK and TWITTER

Re: Here we go
the problem with asking why it happened is that too many people confuse an attempt to explain or understand "why" something has happened with "excusing" what happened. It then leads to more heat than light.David Lee's Hair wrote:Please why do you think it happened??William the White wrote:I recognise that this is rhetorical but is it permitted to ask why you think it happened?

England match called off.
Why not just hold it somewhere peaceful and calm, like the North?

I think we need Rio Ferdinand to tweet a statement appealing for calm.
