There is NO positive argument for signing Jerome.

Exactly the same a certain Johan Elmander scored in the 08-09 season no?Lofthouse Lower wrote:He scored 5 goals last season.
Five goals.
If Owen can give the sort of polish to Jerome that he did to Elmo in his last season, plus the lower transfer fee and the fact he's only 24 and i think it'll be a good bit of business...
blind faith...

Here's one: Owen Coyle rates him, and I tend to believe Owen Coyle knows more about football than anyone on here.Lofthouse Lower wrote:There is NO positive argument for signing Jerome.

in mitigation- in a side hardly set up to make lots of chances. he might be shit he might not- dont really know - but IF our manager is willing to take a punt then fair do's. After all not many were willing to take a punt on Kevin Davies all those years ago

That's a pretty poor standard of debate - That's not convincing me.jimbo_bwfc wrote:Here's one: Owen Coyle rates him, and I tend to believe Owen Coyle knows more about football than anyone on here.Lofthouse Lower wrote:There is NO positive argument for signing Jerome.
I trust Coyle - but this one is completely baffling. The lad has no redeeming features to his game whatsoever. His goal return is poor, his link-up play is crap and he has fuc king hair braids for god's sake.

I see the parallel, but Davies wasn't £3.5m at a time when we're fairly skint and need to make every penny count.lovethesmellofnapalm wrote:Lofthouse Lower wrote:He scored 5 goals last season.

I couldn't comment. I've never seen him with a ball at his feet.jimbo_bwfc wrote:If you asked Liverpool fans, they'd tell you N'Gog is slower with the ball at his feet than Kevin Davies...
Davies that is....

I tend not to ask Liverpool fans anything in regards to football.

When Birmingham were playing well, he was putting in goals at an acceptable rate for a 'non-scoring big man'. 18 goals in his first two Premier League campaigns is better than I'd expect from Kevin Davies.Lofthouse Lower wrote:That's a pretty poor standard of debate - That's not convincing me.jimbo_bwfc wrote:Here's one: Owen Coyle rates him, and I tend to believe Owen Coyle knows more about football than anyone on here.Lofthouse Lower wrote:There is NO positive argument for signing Jerome.

3 goals last season was crap, but then the players around him were crap too. Kevin Davies only scored 3 goals a few years ago when we had a crap team- and the last couple of seasons would have been similar returns had he not been on penalties.
Jerome is quick, he's a fairly decent big-man, he bullied Wheater like he was Matthew Upson in the Cup game, he's not clinical in front of goal but he's still young and plenty of potential to grow and take over SKD's position in the team.
You won't find many strikers for 3.5M with Premier Leauge experience who are under 30 (let alone only 24).
He's no Danny Sturridge, but he's no Grzegorz Rasiak either. Birmingham fans on that article were all very positive about him and seemed to put last season down to him having no service.
If he was coming in in isolation there might be cause for worry but with Tuncay and the possiblity of SWP too, it seems like a decent deal to me.

Re: TKIZ's impossibly brilliant all new Transfer Rumours thr
I'm worried that it's a panic buy.
We're a few days from the big kick off and we've ticked off so many names from the list of potential striker signings that we're stuck with the dregs. No doubt that Jerome represents a scraping of the bottom of a very deep barrel.
Not impressed.
Would much MUCH rather have had N'Gog. He fits the criteria - a young and hungry striker (with something to prove), who can get on the end of Davies' headers or Tuncay's passes and finish them. Jerome can't do either. He's proven to be an incredibly average footballer.
Disappointing signing.

Bravo! Yes we ALL share a degree of scepticism with regard to this deal, but the man WE wanted to manage our club is doing his job, so we have to stand by his decision. Saying "if Megson was signing him we'd all be spitting feathers" is a moot point for that exact reason, because none of us wanted him to be in charge in the first place. I'm not sure myself if Jerome would work out, and he wouldn't be my first choice, but so long as we're not breaking the bank and Coyle thinks he can do a job for us, I'll get behind him and the team.jimbo_bwfc wrote:When Birmingham were playing well, he was putting in goals at an acceptable rate for a 'non-scoring big man'.

It's not a panic buy, we've been chasing him all summer apparently! If anything by that reckoning, it'd be N'Gog that would be the panic buy.
Voice your opinions all you like, it's healthy. But if you're on his back as soon as he takes to the pitch (which sounds possible looking at all the negativity RE: Jerome), you're a bell-end by default.

The fact we've been linked all summer kind of dispells the fact its a panic buy if we get him.... Tuncay on the other hand....Lofthouse Lower wrote:I'm worried that it's a panic buy.

I think you need to realise that if people are sceptical on here then that doesn't necessarily translate into that we'll spend the City game booing him or anyone for that matter.
It's a bizarre signing - a lot of cash on someone who doesn't score that many - echoes of the Elmander deal perhaps.

Re: TKIZ's impossibly brilliant all new Transfer Rumours thr
He's not irredeemably shit, so I think the reaction is slightly overboard.
I'd prefer N'Gog (and it would be a bit bizarre if we baulked at paying £4mil for N'Gog and then stuck £3.5-6mil on Jerome), but Jerome does have a lot of what nice people would call the 'raw materials' to be a good striker - he's quick, strong and works hard. Kicking straight might be an issue, but I've a feeling he'll do all right here.
If we can get the player that played against us in the Cup, then he'll be a great buy (although I accept that you could say that about any striker who's had one or more decent games ever).

In fairness, Rasiak was an international. So that argument doesn't hold much water
