It's got nothing to do with City saving money, they're not exactly skint. They need to offload players to comply with the new UEFA regulations.

City want shut of SWP, but he won't go to Wigan, who are offering the most. City still want a transfer fee. To get rid of him they are willing to hand over the transfer fee to him.

The question that no-ones asking is cui bono?
Everyones if it happens. City save a big chunk of money.

SWP gets first team football.

And we get the player we want.

It really is that simple. Hinges on whether we are the only team he wants to play for, and whether City are happy to save say only 2/3 of his wages. But you know they may prefer that option to having him sit around picking up full whack every week for another year.
Bingo.

So seeing as everyone in the world knows about it, and therefore secrecy plays no part, why not just give him the cash as a signing on fee, and pay less to City?
Because the issue is not ours to resolve. We have agreed a fee with City, that we are happy with and offered a wage we are happy with.

If City want to pay him off, then thats up to them. Nowt to do with us. Its between them and SWP. They can come back and say the fee has gone up by 1M as we need that to pay him off. If they do that then the decision is back with us.

But as it stands its City's choice whether they want to pay up the difference to save that % of his wages or not.

And if they don't he won't come to us.

So its everything to do with us.

Cui bono here means that City want him out, we want him, he probably wants first team football with certain money-related caveats.

In other words, the most expeditious way of concluding that transfer would be releasing him to us on a free, we pay him the signing on fee that he would receive from City that we provided anyway. Its got nothing to do with us paying him higher wages, I think I'll scream if someone says that again.

Except its not as simple as that. You don't know what City are prepared to pay him and on what basis. Loads of players get pay offs from clubs to encourage them to move on. The 2M we're paying City may be more than they would pay SWP anyways, so they'd still be up on the deal.
The pay off may relate to image rights or commercial agreements. It may not be entirely down to paying off a salary difference.

And we may simply not be prepared to pay the difference. We may be perfectly happy to pay a 2M fee to City for SWP's services but not be prepared to effectively pay him a higher wage than we were initially offering. Who knows the deal may already include a signing on fee....Even if City waived the 2M fee, doesn't mean Coyle would be happy just passing that on to SWP!

An improved bid of £4m has been made for the French striker but it remains to be seen whether Kenny Dalglish will allow him to leave Anfield without having first signed a replacement.

It is also understood that a second bid is in the offing for Rangers youngster Gregg Wylde after a £300,000 offer was turned down at the end of last week.

I would suggest we weren't that arsed about SWP once we signed Eagles. Until Lee went and broke his leg. Our priorities have changed.

Having said that, since Tuncay arrrived, if all other things are equal, we only really need another striker.

Just the Rangers kid, but i think he was an extra anyway. So, dont know.
Depends how much PSG are offering him. If it's matching his current salary or close, he'll be off. If its the same as say Wigan & Stoke are offering then he may still fancy us, since its not necessarily about who's offering the most at this stage. But it might be a tempting new challenge for him, so if its a serious bid then its bonjour cos i think he'd go for it.

The Qatar-bankrolled PSG project is quite interesting. However, you'd think that after being literally sidelined at MegaRichChelsea then MegaRichCity, SWP might fancy some, y'know, first-team football.

As for the pay-off, it happens all the time. Players who have agitated for a transfer get a sickeningly incorrectly named "loyalty bonus". However, it is entirely between the player and the selling club as a precursor to them relinquishing his contract. If (if) he digs his heels in then Citeh are liable for £50kpw – knocking on £2.5m – for somebody Mancini clearly doesn't want. If they pay him £1m while getting a £2m transfer fee they're up on the deal and also free of a potentially sulky heel-kicker.

(And I'm sure his wage was earlier reported at £80kpw...)

Bit harsh - i think first & foremost he's still hoping against hope that his boyhood club Citeh want to keep him.
