Youth development - an interesting stat

Post by blurred » Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:22 am

Bolton didn't once field a player last season who had been developed at the club (ie spent 3 years there between the ages of 15-21) - the only club in the PL who did so, and one of only half a dozen or so in the major European leagues. (Chievo, Parma, Palermo, Brest, Almeria and Lecce were the others.)

That's according to CIES Football Observatory report, by the way.

There always used to be young players on the fringes - where have they all gone? Is it a conscious decision or is the quality just not there at the moment?

Bogdan
Riley
Blakeman
Vela
O'Halloran
Obadeyi

All either home-grown or have been with us for a while - all on the fringes of the first team. Not a bad effort.

Am not a Bolton expert, believe it or not, so shoot me down if i'm wrong but they are all pretty much your reserves at the moment apart from possibly Bogdan as 2nd choice now Al Habisi has gone? I don't believe the stat was about how many home grown players you have playing for your reserves but regularly for the first team?! ;)

No mention of the first team there GG and therefore bollocks.

Disregard.

Now, lets have a conversation about how many British players played for your lot last seaon. In the first team.

I think that the youth development got put on the back burner in the past couple of years, especially under Megson.

You can't expect Coyle to come straight in and put youngsters in the team. This year he is definitely pushing for the youngsters to get involved, Riley looks the most likely this season.

By all accounts had a good game on Wednesday and should be pushing for a place in the squad.
Pfffft.

errrmm, off the top of my head: Walcott, Wilshere, Gibbs, Ramsey, Eastmond, Frimpong, Lansbury... there may be more.

There may well be more if you keep including non-british players.

Frimpong was born in Accra, Ghana

Yup, I don't have instant recall on Arsenal's fringe players. He also is excluded on the grounds he played in exactly 0 games for you last season

I'll give you Gibbs (20 appearances) Walcott (38) and Wilshere (47)

The rest Ramsey, Eastmond and Lansbury only managed 12 apps. between them. Only one of which (Ramsey (7) played in the premiership.

Alright, I'll give you frimpong ;) thought he had played in the carling cup but I checked and you are indeed right. To be fair, Ramsey was injured or would have played more and eastmond may not have play in the premiership but he played at a level Bolton players can only dream of ;) champions league...

Thanks for your considered opinion, if I thought you had the first clue about football I might take some notice of it, but as it is, I think you're best off jogging on round the park in an attempt to burn off the steak slice from earlier... ;)

Which is exactly what you'll be doing if your club don't loosen the purse strings.
