Yes, Vermaelen is a world class defender. Koscielny is a good defender with a lot of potential. He makes mistakes but he put in a lot of outstanding performances last season with Johan Djourou and Sebastian Squillaci next to him.Prufrock wrote:Koscielny is gash. Mertesacker is gash. And no, Mertesacker is not 'gash', you don't earn 75 caps for Germany at only 26 years old by being 'gash'.

Does Mertesacker have a more talented brother? I can only assume you're confusing the two.ferrarif50hunt wrote:And no, Mertesacker is not 'gash', you don't earn 75 caps for Germany at only 26 years old by being 'gash'.

No i'm being serious. He will get found out in the Premier League. He has two speeds... slow and stop.ferrarif50hunt wrote:BL3 wrote:Does Mertesacker have a more talented brother? Since when do you need to be an Olympic sprinter to be able to defend in this league? John Terry can barely move but he's still pretty decent don't you think? Yes, speed helps, but intelligence is just as important. You don't need to be flat out if you defend smartly and position yourself correctly.
Mertesacker is a very calm, composed, intelligent defender who will do just fine in this league.

And, of course, you'd be saying exactly the same of him had he signed for Spurs.ferrarif50hunt wrote:

You probably said the same of Cygan and Senderos, too.

Just looked and Nixon is hinting Cahill could move yet and that several deals hinge on it.

He's a lumbering carthorse and the only way he's going to do 'just fine' in this league is if your midfield play ten yards in front of him to shield him from anyone running at him.ferrarif50hunt wrote:Mertesacker is a very calm, composed, intelligent defender who will do just fine in this league.

Steady. Vermaelen is good. Vidic is world class. Vermaelen is not Vidic. Koscielny is error-prone, can't head, and positionally dodgy. That he is better than Djorou (will be a decent-ish centre half away from the 'big club' glare) and Squillaci (utter wank) doesn't say much. Mertesacker is just not very good. If Arsene Wenger signs young, small, creative midfielders, I tend to assume they are good. If Arsene Wenger signs centre halves, I tend to assume they are shit. This second rule has only twice failed. Sol Campbell, and Vermaelen (you could argue Kolo Toure, who was very good, for a bit, with the right partner, but he came from that dodgy Belgian Ivorian production line anyway).

Presumably 'hinges' both ways. Spurs no pennies till they sell, and us targets lined up IF GC goes?

Don't be stupid, he's a good defender. Maybe not world class but good none the less.

We dont even know it's Spurs. Fook me more twists and turns than a Dallas plot line!Prufrock wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:I think he means deals we might do. Aye, assuming it's them. Kinda know it will be. Fecking Droopy popping along at five past midnight tomorrow with an in-between-y £9-12M bid, good money, but no replacement.

Don't come crawling back for Cahill in January.

The Carling Cuo final was the first time I got to watch BWFC on tv this century. I remember Thome.Bruce Rioja wrote:Remember Emerson Thome?ferrarif50hunt wrote:Even though we've now signed Per Mertesacker, we're still expected to put in a final, take it or leave it bid for Gary Cahill tonight or tomorrow morning. If it's not accepted, we will apparently turn our attention to Chelsea's Brazilian CB, Alex.
