Serving with gravy made from the meat juices, peas (regular not mushy) and mashed carrots.William the White wrote:Steak and mushroom... Mmmm... Comfort food of the highest order... What veg are you serving it with?
I've never done pastry myself - only the frozen stuff...
Chips will be justified if we win.

At least that one's still alive. Normally what happens is that in a battery of four hens, three will peck the weakest hen's insides out via its arse (or Parson's nose if you prefer).Gooner Girl wrote:out of boredom they peck each other til they look something like this

Moral issues aside, the question of the cost of eggs at the point of purchase doesn't really come into it for me - the taste of free range egg yolk is absolutely delicious. Caged hens fed on chicken mash deliver eggs with a pale, insipid yolk that tastes of very little, so why bother anyway, regardless of them being a few Pence cheaper?

Personally, would've gone for boiled new potatoes in a parsley butter with green beans and your carrot mash. There should be enough gravy in your pie, but then again, you can never have too much gravy.

Bruce, this is her now, a year or so later.

Free range eggs do taste better but for the best tasting eggs you have to keep your own poultry!
I recomend these 2 websites if anyone is interested in finding out more...
I'm the Mid Sussex co-ordinator for this one
http://www.ciwf.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and Thebish and i volunteer for this one
http://www.bhwt.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Probably this discussion should be moved to the food thread...

Regarding keeping your own, my MD has started keeping his own hens recently and brought me a
half a dozen in - absolutely delicious.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Dunno tbh Bruce. I think they keep hybrids in the cages rather then pure breeds as they lay more eggs. Looks Rhode island Red like though, i agree.Bruce Rioja wrote:She a Rhode Island Red, GG? Yeah, its nice to be able to give eggs away, we often do when we have enough but only the ducks are laying at the moment.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Horrible places, noisy, dark and stink to high heaven. We've gone in to get out chickens and ended up pulling out dead birds the farmer hasn't bothered to clear away (and the odd cockerel...)
