Where were you when you heard..........
Inspired by the 9/11 thread on that other bit, I was thinking about momentous moments but with a BWFC slant......
1 )So.....come on then, where were you when you heard that Big Sam had knocked it on the head?
I was working abroad, watching BBC World Service, when on the scrolling bar flashed up "Kevin Nolan says he is looking forward to working alongside Sammy Lee" and as this filtered through my brain I wondered 'why would he say that when he's already working with him?'. I couldn't get this out of my mind and so rang home for clarification and BANG, there was the news.
Big Sam
2) Megson had left
I was at home, unemployed, readying myself to spend an afternoon watching Halloween 2 at the Valley (the Rob Zombie remake - shite). It came on SSN and instantly I ran round the house quicker than Paul Robinson at top speed celebrating and ringing people to inform them of the good news.
In fact, does anyone have the link to the thread discussing his dismissal?

Re: Where were you when you heard Allardyce had resigned?
I don't remember where I was for that, but I remember the day Megson was sacked, that was such a good day.

I remember Megson's appointment. I was sat here, crushed.
Can't recall where I was when he or BSA left. Soz.

Re: Where were you when you heard..........
I doubt many people remember. Not exactly the same impact or relevance as 9/11.
Sppose if you're of a certain age it has an impact if Big Sam was what you mainly knew.
Was far more gutted when Rioch left, especially after the scenes in the "town hall square". I thought for sure that had turned his head...ah well!

Don't remember either. However, I was in Bury when I learned that we'd appointed Bruce Rioch, and was in Redditch when I learned that Todd had left.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Sam - dunno. Think I was at a football training session at Uni. Not impressed I was.
Megson - dunno.]

I remember the overwhelming sense of relief when Megson left. It was as if a serious problem had been dealt with, like a monkey off our collective backs.
And I was driving when we appointed Sammy Lee. Heart sank. Allardyce leaving had felt pretty inevitable from Jan '06. Can't describe why, it just felt like something wasn't right, so when they announced he hadn't turned up at Chelsea (that was the game wasn't it?) I knew the writing was on the wall.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Don't remember the official statement about Big Sam, but didn't Motson mention it for the first time on MOTD during the intro to the Bolton Chelsea match? Something about him not travelling with the squad and he expected him to leave in the morning. Was pretty odd.

Nah not negative. Managers come and go, they are all ultimately in it for themselves, and so they should be.Lofthouse Lower wrote:You're a negative git
It's why I was never too worked up when Megson was here, like every other manager he was just a footnote in the history of the club, and every manager following will be until one wins us a major trophy. Until then I just hope every manager keeps the dream alive, and to that extent it means keeping us in the top flight. If they do that then quite frankly it'll do until the Messiah comes along!
Oh and Allardyce was at the Chelsea game on the touchline as usual. It had leaked in the papers the night before that he was leaving.

Twice upon a time on a dark stormy nights I was at work when two managers left Bolton. It was the best of times and the worst of times.Lofthouse Lower wrote:Quite the storyteller, aren't you

Now you've got me.....
Re: Where were you when you heard..........
Remember Big Sam leaving quite vividly. I was backpacking across Australia at the time (and yet this is the memory I keep...) and had a few weeks previously become friends with a Blackburn fan. Having left him behind at the other end of the country I walked into a computer cafe in Cairns to check my email and saw him sitting behind one of the PCs.
This was probably the only time I've felt a surge of pleasure at seeing a Blackburn fan and was promptly punished by his gleeful exclamation that "So Big Sam's fecked you off then!"
The day got worse from there.

Re: Where were you when you heard..........
Didn't the Megson news come the evening after the Hull game? Im sure I was at home not work, it made my frigging day anyway.
Not sure about Allardyce.
I remember a mate saying he was at school when he heard about Frandsen being sold, bah I cant remember that far back!

Absolutely no idea...not really as world changing 9/11.
Re: Where were you when you heard..........
1) I was a student at the time and was working in Comet. Sky sports news was on about 6 TVs when the 'Breaking News' Came up so couldn't really miss it.
2) Was in the pub, getting on a bit, woke up in the morning and had to double check in case I was imagining it

Re: Where were you when you heard..........
Ah, just remembered where I was for Sam's exit: driving down the M1 through those roadworks at St Albans which only took a decade or so.
Re: Where were you when you heard..........
I rmember Mego's appointment. I was reffing 5 a side at Bolton Arena listening to the 300 or so fans outside begging Gartside not to.
I still fail to understand how Garty's largely escaped taking the blame for that one.
I remember the feeling of relief when Big Sam went, but not the place
