What are you watching tonight?

If you have a life outside of BWFC, then this is the place to tell us all about your toilet habits, and those bizarre fetishes.......

The playing thread is mostly about music - the watching thread is mostly film and tv...

you CAN get radio on a digital TV - so I'll put this here...

the other day I discovered a fab R4 programme called "More or Less" - where they examine the numbers and statistics bandied about in the news (often by politicians) and explore the truth behind them and what they actually mean...

I heard just a little bit as I made my sunday tea in advance of George Gently..

for example... they were examining the figures in the news last week about 75% of those convicted in the riots having previous convictions - which sounds like a lot - and was fuel for Ken Clarke in one way - and Dave C in another...

they pointed out that this is actually LESS than the average for all convictions (ie - more then 75% of people convicted normally have previous convictions) - and also analysed the figures and pointed out that a very high percentage of those arrested and then convicted were caught on CCTV - and identified by the police - in which case - the police are bound to recognise (from their files) MORE people who have previous convictions than not...

anyway - it's not just political statistics - but advertising claims - sciencey claims and all sorts - and to anyone who enjoys understanding numbers and what is actually behind them and sometimes hears them say "correlation is not the same as causality!!" - this is the programme for you!

it is available on i-player and (I think) as a podcast

I've a book recommendation for you. Bish. The Tiger That Isn't by Michael Blastland and Andrew Dilnot. You'll love it ;)

Edit: Just noticed that they're responsible for that very programme.

Thank you Bruce - I shall head on over to amazon then!

that programme also regularly makes use of Ben Goldacre whose book "Bad Science" I have already recommended on the book thread many moons ago... (I think)

edit: Tim Harford is also a good place to go for this kind of book - The Undercover Economist f'rinstance...

I also heard this morning that 23% had no previous convictions. So who were the other 2%? Government agents? Random anarchists? Penry, the mild mannered janitor?

Best use of Hong Kong Fooey in any thread ever award goes to Gary....
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Gutted, Gary.

Didn't know that there was a new series due on. Caught the last three minutes and have series linked it. It's all head-on Rock n Roll in Casa Rioja
