If we are struggling come January and in a relegation battle we may have to sacrifice any Cahill fee and keep him till the summer. May not be able to risk selling our best player and defender if we are at the wrong end of the table!

Looking at the way we're collectively defending, not sure it'll make much difference if we sell him or not

If Barcelona are involved in January I'd imagine it would be with regards to a pre-contract off on a free in the summer. I can see that. His being available on a free could interest clubs who would otherwise think him a good player but not good enough to be chasing with the company cheque book.

indeed... for our purposes, a straight bidding war between (say) chelsea and spurs would be better...

He can sign a pre-contract with Barca. He can't with Chelsea or Spurs. I still think he'll be a Chelsea player in the Summer.
