Owen Coyle has insisted he is in no rush to speak to Gary Cahill about extending the defender's contract at Bolton.

Cahill was linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium during the transfer window but nothing materialised despite interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.

Coyle declared earlier this week that the only bids Bolton received for the England international were way off their valuation

The Trotters manager admits he was surprised to keep hold of the centre-back, but says talks over a new deal can wait.

Cahill's current contract expires at the end of this season and he will be able to leave for nothing next summer, while clubs could come back in for him in January.

Asked about contract talks, Coyle told Sky Sports News: "It is not a conversation for right now.

"At the end of the day, Gary and his representatives will need to have a bit of a chat, but my focus is making sure Gary concentrates on the football side of things.

"Players have got to understand that all the benefits and rewards that come their way, they only come on the back of what you earn by performing well on the pitch, and if you don't perform there won't be that interest from elite clubs."

Keeping Cahill's focus on Bolton is Coyle's priority at present, although he fully expects the 25-year-old to one day join a club competing in the UEFA Champions League.

"Gary is ambitious and wants to play at the highest level of the game, and I am totally understanding of this," Coyle explained.

"Now, we are in the best league in the world, that goes without saying, and the next step to that is the Champions League.

"There is no doubt that Gary, I think, in time would love to be part of an elite club, and I think he is more than capable of playing for any of them.

"That will happen in time, I have no doubt about it, but before then, Gary has to make sure he is focused and doing his job for Bolton, both for himself and to make sure he is an integral part of that England squad.

"I expected Gary to go in the summer to an elite club, that was my belief, because of the quality I know he has."

After watching Jones play the last few games for United, you can easily see why United paid $15m for him and no one wanted Cahill at that price. I appreciate that he is playing in a team with far better players but he is real class and will probably be the centre back partner for Cahill for England soon.

Mind I now hear that Cahill is off to Spain in January and Champions League football with last year's champions!!!!

Put Cahill in that United back four and there'd be no visible difference. I actually think Jones is good at breaking out from the back, but defensively he's all over the shop. The amount of times he left holes for Chelsea to run into was amazing. How that game didn't finish about 6-6 I'll never know.

Arsene said the other day he won't be making another bid for him because he is happy with his defender's per mertesacker Spurs could come back in and make a bid, but according to reports this deal with chelsea was sorted out weeks ago.

So how much money will you be losing out on by holding out on selling Cahill in January and not August? And is losing out on that amount of money for the sake of having him an extra 5 months or so worth it, when you look at your league position?

Well since Coyle/Gartside confirmed the highest bid was less than 10M then if Chelsea are willing to fork out 7-8M then not much it.

If someone was willing to meet a fair valuation last summer of 12-15M then I'd have been much happier to sell him then, but if Chelsea pay more than 5M this window then I'm happy enough with that.

We have 9pts with Cahill in the side, I dread to think how many we'd have with Knight playing every week.

So roughly 11.5 Million quid to improve a footballer only to see him go for half of that despite him being better than when we signed him and him now being an international.
