just got back from ye dentist

how does this compare?

routine check-up - £17

I need a crown - £204
On the NHS you have a tooth that needs a temp filling, then a root canal treatment, then another temp filling, then a crown fitting.

Total cost £204.

Privately that more that wouldn't even cover the cost of the root canal procedure alone!
yeah - the crown is 2 appointments - first to do the drilling out and major pain work - and a temp filling - then 2 weeks later to have the crown fitted...
Usually before a crown its a root canal treatment.

Thing is, most of the time its not worth getting that part done on the NHS as their dentists dont have the time or the correct equipment.

that's what I mean by the drilling and the pain!

Where on earth do you get the idea that NHS dentists don't have the time or the correct equipment to do root canal work?

I've had root canal at my NHS dentist before - and it was fine - no problems (and - actually - very little pain)

I should add that an x-ray was included in my £17 check-up fee today...

Some NHS dentists do, some don't. They generally have booking slots of 20 or 40 minutes, neither of which is suitably long enough for a root canal. Depending upon where they are in the country, sometimes they are only able to charge for a maximum of 40 minutes activity with one patient in one session. Therefore some NHS dentists won't even do a root canal on the NHS as effectively they are losing money doing so. Others will and but few have the most up to date equipment available to them.

Many do not and will often advise the patient to go private if they want the best chance of it being successful. You can still get the fillings and crown done on the NHS.

A good thorough root canal should last 20 years. Give or take, depending upon the state of the tooth at the time. Plenty of evidence suggests that you get a far longer lasting result from a private specialist. Which brings me onto the fact that root canal has become a specialist procedure performed with specialised viewing equipment that makes seeing each canal in the tooth far easier. Very rarely will this equipment be available on the NHS.

Generally I would say that a GOOD NHS dentist would explain the pros and cons to the patient of having the procedure done on the NHS or private.

I suspect that soon root canal will not be available at all via the NHS as it will be considered an "optional" procedure, rather than essential maintenance. The choice will be extraction on the NHS or route canal privately.
