Re: Where are you going tonight?
Off to Highbury tonight (Relentless Garage) to watch The Answer supported by Gentleman's Pistols.
First time in aaaages I've been as keen to see the support act as the main band.
Rock On!

Re: Where are you going tonight?
For the Octagon theatre go'ers and re the recent discussion on why Margot Leicester isn't more widely known, I was watching the box yesterday and who should turn up in a commercial but Tobias Beer (Canon Throbbing in the current farce). It was for some twiglet-like biscuit that I can't recall the name off but it was certainly him.

Didn't need a hearing aid for these bands and there wasn't enough room to swing my pants, let alone do the Quo boogie!Gooner Girl wrote:Hope you turned your hearing aid up before going in old man?! For the rock aficionados out there you have to check these two bands out. Good old fashioned blues/ rock in the style of Sabbath/Zep/Black Crowes.

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Doc Hotdog was speaking highly of Gent's Pistols when we went for a round the other week, so I checked them out. Clearly superb if you're into the 'classic rock' thing, it's just that I'm not, well, not entirely. If you haven't already, Enfield, then you may wish to route out The Mooney Suzuki.Gary the Enfield wrote:alone do the Quo boogie!

Gentleman's Pistols do have one of the best names and they're a cracking band to boot. They weren't really going anywhere till Billy Steer joined em though!
This week I'm going to see Saviours on Tuesday night and Victor Bailey on Friday night. Nice bit of variety!

In the interests of variety I'm off to see Tori Amos on Friday. Except for a copy of her exceptional cover of Lloyd Cole's 'Rattlesnakes' I don't own a single thing by her, she just fascinates me.Dr Hotdog wrote:Gentleman's Pistols do have one of the best names and they're a cracking band to boot. Re: Where are you going tonight?
Have just returned from three plays in Stratford on Avon, bargain B&B, madly serious theatre. With loads of laughter in two of the three.
[Can I just say all theatre lovers should read, and thebish and Tango should at least read the first...]...
David Edgar's Written on the Heart is the story of the creation of the King James Bible... how it has to negotiate all the potential heresies and 'tell the true word of the Lord'... how many compromises are you prepared to take to serve the political masters that rule you... And are you, for the sake of your soul... prepared for the stake... ???
Won't do the other two just yet... the anal rape of philosophers and examinations of state punishment of criminals deserve their own grim posts...
We had a lovely weekend in Stratford...
Two friends went to Swansea...

Was one of the others Marat/Sade?
Sounds like it might have been. Is it as dreadful as has been almost universally made out, with multitudes walking out? I thought it sounded interesting if not 'charming'.

Indeed, the second was the Marat/Sade...Prufrock wrote:Was one of the others Marat/Sade?

First - this is a great play, that I recommend to all who are interested in a debate between political/revolutionary change and individual desire... There may be not many on here, but, perhaps you, Pru...
I've seen two previous productions that had integrity...
This one had few, if any, walking out, and our bunch certainly didn't feel the need to... This despite the first half ending with the gratuitous (not called for in the script) anal rape of the philosopher Voltaire by a gang of incomprehensible ruffians...
The Daily Mail view of it all is much exaggerated, but the director's desire for notoriety gave them quite a lot of ammunition... The first 90 minutes were great, after that the genuine virtues of a great play struggled to get through a director's smokescreen that would take me several paragraphs to list... So... will avoid... though if you fancy an hour long diatribe book a lunch date with me...
Even after his atrocities this is still worth seeing, really, and all the priggishness is just the usual tabloid shite... They want to pillory him because he does sexually 'outrageous' stuff...
I do because he fecks up the play...
Re: Where are you going tonight?
I'm down in Cheltenham at the missus' parents next weekend, and me and Ms Pru try to get to Stratford whenever I am. What would you recommend given you've seen three there recently?William the White wrote:Indeed, the second was the Marat/Sade...Prufrock wrote:Was one of the others Marat/Sade?

Re: Where are you going tonight?
The Caryl Churchill 'play reading' I saw Sunday morning - 'softcops' was I suspect a one-off event. If by any chance it's on your weekend then I think you'd like it - it's an examination of forms of punishment of crimes - from savage torture to psychological terror - and is like a mixture of Brecht, Dean Swift and Kafka, crammed into 65 minutes. tremendous, i thought, funny, thought-provoking satire.
Of the two others - Edgar's play is high ideas but emotionally a little thin. Marat/Sade - well, I've given my take on that above. If i had to make a choice I'd see the Marat/Sade because it's hardly ever produced and, despite your youth, you may never get another chance to see it.
The RSC is doing an Olympics-connected 'World shakespeare' season next year - and the Globe is doing all 37 plays from 37 different countries.
I'm really hoping I can organise things so I can complete my collection. I have nine Williams yet to see and this is a big chance to put that right...

Re: Where are you going tonight?
So despite being a poor production the play is still worth seeing? It sounds really interesting to me, but not convinced I'll be able to convince. She wants to see Robin Hood

As i said, the first 90 mins are tremendous, then the directorial self-indulgence starts getting excessive.Prufrock wrote:So despite being a poor production the play is still worth seeing? It sounds really interesting to me, but not convinced I'll be able to convince. She wants to see Robin Hood.
But you may not get another chance to see this really original and daring play... even LF doesn't have the film, and amazon has two used at sky-high prices... Robin Hood is, of course, a very different option...

Bowling. (10 Pin) I actually have no idea what you guys call it in England or if it's the same. But, it's my work league so it's not really competitive. I have about a 140 average. I am not crap and I am not really that good. But it'll be $3.00 pints of Guiness and that's a plus.

Get the train, get drunk and make inappropriate suggestions to her. That'd be my plan!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
