Saw Tori Amos 3 times. She puts on a good show. There are some lulls in the show, but when she goes for it, it's pretty damn cool. But the crowd was always full of girls all trying to prove their non-conformity. (Saw her in DC, Virginia, and New Jersey venue didnt matter.)

Tori Amos at Th'Apollo toneet. Been looking forward to this for yonks. Up to now she's been doing 25 numbers a night, so am going to drive and remain sober so as to take it all in.

Not the kind of gig you'd find me at normally (I'm more of a Manchester Orchestra kind of guy myself), so am looking forward to it as being something quite different.

I have to say that I went to a few 'bommies' in Sussex (Crowborough) a few years back & was amazed at how it was far more focused on the religious element it was down there. It's only around 15 years ago but the Guy was, actually, an effigy of the Pope and the expressions were very direct.

Very odd it felt. I know what the history is, but for me it had always been a great excuse to collect wood, have the biggest bommie in the area buy fireworks, have dens & small fires until the great night arrived.

Clearly it was "nothing personal" & all that but I'd never viewed it that way till then.

Anyway .... off to see Anonymous later. Let's see if William the White needs to change his moniker.

Lewes is the place in Sussex to go for Bonfires. Its mental there on the 5th November, apparently.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used to live in Crowborough, didn't he? Think it was Crowborough anyway, certainly down that neck of the woods but wherever it was I drove past a boozer that was imaginatively called The Deerstalker.

Up to Our Kids for the bommy tonight. Uncle Bruce has overdone it on the black peas with bacon and onions and will be heading there with two huge pots thereof. Well I didn't know that they were going to kick off like that machine on Quatermass now, did I?

f8 with a 3sec exposure, manual focus... (all the exif is there in flickr somewhere!)

I've never tried fireworks before... so - lessons!

1. the settings are about right (manual focus - set at infinity - auto focus would be a disaster!)
2. take a torch - then you can see your camera controls in the dark! (I didn't!)
3. tripod (obviously!)
4. hardest part is predicting where the firework will explode! so don't zoom in too close (you can always crop - as I have done) watch for the thin tracer line of a rocket going up - when you see it - press the shutter - don't wait for the rocket to explode...
I just used a fairly wide angle to cover a largish portion of sky - but it took me a while to get that right - my first ones were only partial because they were out of shot.
5. I found landscape worked best - though I see other photographers suggest portrait... I found it just gave me a better chance of getting the whole explosion...

(instead of 3secs - you could use the bulb setting - but I don't have one!)

Yes - I am. Sounds a bit similar to the lightning shots I tried to take some time ago. I used the bulb setting but struggled with the focus - until I realised that I wasn't focussing before the shot.

Also ,struggled not moving the camera so now I have a remote cable.

I have a remote gadget - but I haven't yet figured out how to set the camera so that it doesn't revert to the shutter button after every shot so that I have to reset it! (and even less so - in the dark!)

Today went to cineworld in the valley for live performance of the New York Met Opera. Siegfried. Was wonderful. Music was glorious. Singing outstanding. Design brilliant. started at 4.00, finished at 9.20. two intermissions, but i reckon they lasted under an hour in total. So the opera ran at about 4 hours 30. Seemed to fly by, though.

Gotterdammerung on in Feb, Two Verdi in the new year and a Philip Glass in a fortnight. There are others but i think these are the highlights. Only 11.50 a ticket - which is dirt cheap for one of the world's great companies.

Brilliant evening.
