Out of all the deaths in football, this one has hit me the hardest because of his age, the fact that I watched him and considered him one of my all-time favourites and that he was such a nice bloke. He appeared to have such a promising career still left in the game as a manager too.

He was the lynchpin in the best Bolton Wanderers team in my lifetime. Bolton and football legend.
Great era that, when teams would come to the Reebok and we'd be actually expecting to turn them over. And we would, no fuss, no messing around, we'd just beat them. Top times.

just heard Mark Halsey paying his respects on Sky Sports News. He was almost in tears. They were very close by the sounds of it and Speedo had been very supportive during his and his wifes illnesses.
Who's that coming up the hill boys,
The Wanderers are coming up the hill boys,
They all laugh at us, they all mock at us,
They all say our days are numbered,

Born to be a Wanderer, victorious are we....

Can still see that Speed/Campo midfield axis in front of which players like Stelios, Diouf, Nolan and Davies were given the freedome operate. Fantastic times fro BWFC, Gary Speed broke a premier league record for consecutive goalscoring seasons (possibly now passed by Giggs?) at our club I recall. Absolute legend of the game.

Devastating, RIP Gary 'Speedo' Speed.

He and Giggs were the only two to score in every Premier League season up to the year Speed left us, when he didn't play much.

Became the first player to play 500 Premier League games whilst playing for us too. Premier League legend.

Absolutely floored by this. Don't really know what to say. Part of the best BWFC team I've ever seen in my lifetime. And one of the best players in it.

Pleasure to watch him play, such a professional. Rest in peace speedo

Gary Speed ... (R.I.P)

Post by mrpiccollo » Sun Nov 27, 2011 5:01 pm

news has come out today that gary speed former bolton captain and wales manager has taken his own life!.

words cannot describe how awfull this is and how bad i feel for his family truly a great player and leader for bolton, puts things with football really into perspective when someone as notably level headed and well liked as gary speed could feel the only way is to take his own life!.

I think it was against West Ham.
I've no video of it, Adam, but still play it through in my mind like it was yesterday. Perfect execution and what's more it put us four up against West Ham before half time. Great days to be a Wanderer, and Speedo, an absolute steal from Newcastle who they laughably tried to replace with Kluivert, was never anything less than an absolute treat to watch.

Another memory of mine was when he cut his head against Palace (I think) and went through that many shirts that they ran out of the number 6 in the club shop because cut head or not he was still up for every header.

RIP Speedo - I'm still in utter disbelief! :(
May the bridges I burn light your way

The story of how we got him fascinates me.

Apparently, seeing as he was 34, Newcastle were only prepared to give him a rolling contract or something. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Pennines, BSA and his computer boffins had been analysing the date from the previous season. Gary Speed was (when all factors were considered, such as successful passes, yards run, tackles made) the 4th best midfielder in the country (or somesuch). Lord alone knows what Newcastle were thinking, but we then got him for a few hundred grand. Which was an absolute steal. I don't recall, other than that last season, ever seeing a less-than7/10-performance from him. Its a pity his modern day successor is out injured, it would have been nice to see an all action performance at the weekend to honour his passing.

Really sad news.

Part of the first team with which I began my support for this club.

RIP.

Thought it was rather crass of the newscaster at a time like this to be quizzing Robbie Savage about what might have happened behind the scenes when his family may have been watching..Don't often do outburst at home but it made me mad enough to say: "What the fxck has it to do withyou?" Silly I know, but to me it showed massive knobheadability.

They're doing a Speedo special phone in on 606 on 5live now.
Robbie Savage has just broken down on it, saying how he tried to ring him this morning cos he couldn't believe the news.

yeah, but , killing himself, raises suss.

i remember not long back some wwf wrestler died and the tributes poured in , but not much later it turned out he'd killed his family before offing himself.

i hope no 'shit' comes out.

I think it is probably best to wait for any facts to come out before speculating on any reasons, though in fairness to the newsreader it sounded more like he wanted to give Savage an opportunity to say what a great guy he was and how good a family he had and how it was even more shocking. Not sure he was digging as such. The paparazi outside the house though? I'd unleash Hoboh.

Cry Hoboh and let slip the dogs of war?

Anyway, without wishing to appear trite, yes its pretty obvious that people don't hang themselves because they got up this morning and just felt like it. I have no doubt it will come out, whatever it is, but theres no excuse to make it worse for his family.
