I used to love CB, I didn't have one but my mate did and we used to spend hours talking to people who lived within a one mile square of Walkden.

Don't know if you young kids know but not only did it have it's own language (10-4 - yes, 10-10 (till we meet again) and so forth) but each town had it's own CB 'handle'

Walkden was called 'Vegas' any idea why?

Because it had TWO, count 'em TWO bingo halls!

I think Elvis played the Mecca once.

Happy days.
I'm not asking you to 'think outside the box' I just wish you'd have a rummage around in it once in a while.

I lived on 'The Big Hill'. One of my mates set his CB radio up in my bedroom as it'd receive an optimum signal/transmission/wavelength/whatever.
Oh how my brothers and I would fall about, crying with laughter, as soon as said serious CB'er friend (one of these that used to walk about with a plastic lapel badge on proclaiming 'You've Just Eyeballed (such and such)' on it) had buggered off and we'd blaze it back up soley to commit that most cardinal of CB'ing sins - swearing and firing verbal abuse (or bucketmouthing down the rig, as I recall) at the sad saps in CB land, that reckoned they'd be able to track us down and smash up our rig.
We made our own fun in them days! :D

Aye, I had a mate who used to use his Dad's rig when he was out. On more than one occasion we snapped an elastic band round the talk button and fcked off outside leaving the mic next to the stereo playing the full Wet Wet Wet album Popped In Souled Out.
I think it's fair to say that the CB enthusiasts didn't like it when you did that.

One of my lad's mates had a father who used to walk around in a leather waistcoat and cowboy boots and talk in a fake C.B.McCall accent. Wore a cowboy hat in the house too and had a 96ft ariel on his roof. Probably tried to arrange a "convoy" up Albert Road or somewhere.

I was 'Antelope Man' and my mate was 'JR Ewing' - they were just the daftest names we could think of.

We too used to muck about, telling people on Old Clough Lane that we could pick up their signal's in Dallas or Mozambique or wherever we pretended to come from.

I always used to love going on Channel 9 (scorchio!) and pretending I'd been trapped down a well.

The CB'ers didn't like that as C9 was the 'emergency channel' and was monitoried by erm...tossers basically.

I was about 10 at the time but still knew the people sat outside Pembroke Halls having 'eyeballs' were losers.

In them days we just had 'eyeballs' now you've got to squash your knackers up on the windscreen and 'seagull' the occupants.

Errr....so I'm told anyway.

I recall buying my first set of boots. Unshielded, switched off TV's and interfered with the signal for a considerable distance. :-)

I'd forgotten about that. Lives saved? Well, none whatsoever then?!

Pretty sure I was16 at the time, and I finally plucked up the courage to ask this girl I knew out. So, stunned at the acceptance, it hadn't even entered my head that I might be called upon to come up with somewhere to go and something to do. Thankfully she came to the rescue. Well, I say thankfully, or indeed rescue. See, she was from a family of CB enthustiasts who all used to go along to the Bolton CB Club (I doubt that its 'handle' was quite so straightforward, but memory thankfully erodes such fripperies) whose meeting place was at a social club on St. Georges Road, opposite Shimul's, where the Sally Army Hostel now stands.
Had I not seen them all together with my own eyes, I would never have believed that so many geeks, freaks, deadbeats and very, very scary people were actually resident in our town, all eyeball-eyeballing it with one and other, having a big ten four and discussing dipole lengths and feck knows what else with other 'Breakers'.

There was no second date.

Ever?

Don't allow the CBers to win Hoss.

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

That's me finished with Twitter. I gave it a wee shot but it wasn't for me.

And it shouldn't really be for you either.

It's just a running commentary on your drab existence.

You are not important and the world doesn't care if you're having a coffee in Starbucks or a glass of wine at Sam Peacock's.

Tweet that in your newsfeed and smoke it.
