Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has labelled Bolton's England international defender Gary Cahill an 'interesting' player.

Cahill is one of Bolton's star performers and speculation over his future has been intense with his contract due to expire in the summer.

Bolton can ill-afford to lose the stopper, who turns 26 on Monday, on a free transfer, while their fight against the drop will suffer if he leaves next month.

Cahill impressed in Tuesday's six-pointer against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, a 2-1 win that lifted Wanderers from the foot of the Premier League table.

It has been suggested Chelsea have tabled a £7million offer for Cahill, with Villas-Boas remarking the west Londoners are aware of the length on his contract.

"We are aware of Gary's contractual situation," stated Villas-Boas. "He's an interesting player for the club."

Decision

Chelsea are looking for cover in central defence with Brazilian Alex expected to move on in the New Year after submitting a transfer request.

He added: "You know that we have taken a decision this season regarding the central defenders, regarding Alex.

"We haven't decided yet what we are going to do with the Alex situation. We have to make the wisest decision, be it Alex, be it Cahill."

Interesting how he says that they are not sure what they will do with Alex.. he has handed in a transfer request which was accepted so how have they not decided what they are going to do with him?

Sounds like a possible swap deal? Cant see Alex coming to us..

I think most likely it'll involve a Mceachran loan deal as a sweetener, which if it does will be annoying because we have a million players who play in his position...plus i doubt Kakuta will give a glowing reference.

But you know, I know nothing, so ignore this post.

I suspect reading between the lines that we are after that American chappie...

Onouha sounds unlikely based on cost...

Nixon said a month or so ago to Rovers fans asking bout Onouha that his wages were sky high, unlikely to move...

Fortnight ago AVB said he had no interest in Cahill

Maybe his boss captain's had a word

I've heard the rags are eyeing up our Gaz

I'd rate the source around 65% reliable

Terry and Cahill work for England = will work for Chelsea. Quite simple!

I was told and no not by any Mirror Journalist that Cahill to Chelsea was done pretty much straight after the window closed last time round...

Time will tell...

Think he's going there...

AVB almost said as much today....reading between lines..

Onuoha is an interesting one. Can't be happy there. Doesnt strike me as a Wayne Bridge type, plus there was that Gary Cook thing about his mum wasn't there. I'd say he'd go, but would want higher wages than we could afford. QPR maybe?

We'll be looking at centre halves on deals which reduce if we go down, or loans to buy I guess. Not sure who is out there - but I don't want some kid, we want a leader who can slot straight in and boss that back 4. Big ask!

A fully fit Ricketts firing on all would be like a whole new signing if Cahill leaves.

And I think thats our best bet.

So would you not buy a centre half?

What would you spend the money on?

Based on the fact that Nixon is saying it will be spent in Jan?

"Fact" and "Nixon" is just nonsense.

Nixon suggests we'll spend money.

I'm not so sure we will.

Lord knows he's as hit and miss as any randomly picked poster on here, so I stick.

Would I like a new Centre Half? Yes.

Will we get one? Not so sure.

And I wouldn't buy anything if I not only didn't have the money to, but had also maxed out all my sources of credit.
