Re: Petrov
Two wins and a draw since he came back in. Well, sort of two wins and one and a half draws, since he came on at half-time in the Fulham game and that was goalless thereafter.wanderers_on_tour wrote:Since this thread has turned into some sort of confessional...Steinsson has been pretty decent recently n all...
Steinsson's far from the best right-back in the world - he's probably not even the best right-back at Bolton, but Ricketts is busy filling the even bigger problem slot on the other side – but he has his uses, including overlapping, and the general shouting-and-pointing thing absent without Robinson. We can and should do better (let's hope Riley fulfils potential) but he's better than Boyata...

I never laid the blame for everything at Robbo's door, only the things which he's shit at.Wandering Willy wrote:Which is your way of saying " I take it all back -it's not all Robbo's fault".Worthy4England wrote:When Petrov is very good, he's errr, very good.
It doesn't happen often enough or consistently enough and when he's very bad, you might as well play with 10.
Re: Petrov
There's fook all between Ricketts and Steiner. Other than one has been injured and has replaced Robbo, thus gaining a more favourable perspective.

Re: Petrov
Like one or two others his attitude and commitment seem better. He has one glaring fault for me; he follows the ball towards the direction of play and all too often leaves the back post and beyond with acres of space for anyone coming in from the left.wanderers_on_tour wrote:Since this thread has turned into some sort of confessional...Steinsson has been pretty decent recently n all...

Re: Petrov
Personally, I don't think he tries hard enough to cut out the crosses.
He does the right thing by staying narrow, but when the ball gets forced out wide, he doesn't work hard enough to get tight. Always seems to give the attacker that half a yard to get a cross into the box. You need to get tight whilst the ball is on it's way, not when they receive it
That's my only real qualm with him.

Re: Petrov
Rather simplistic. FWIW I don't despise either (mind you, I don't frequently fork out my hard-earned, etc etc) but they're different players. Steiner can't tackle but is better coming forward. Ricketts is good for his versatility at the back but isn't as much threat going forward, occasional howitzers notwithstanding...Prufrock wrote:There's fook all between Ricketts and Steiner. Re: Petrov
Not sure about Ricketts not being much threat. Has a good change of pace, and gets to the byline a lot. Both are better at attacking than they are at defending (at full back in Ricketts' case anyway).

Re: Petrov
There is nothing between them. I've not seen either of the games Ricketts's played in since his return, but he was good going forward. He used to be the only player on our team who could regularly beat his man, and his crossing wasn't shit. He just can't defend.

He defended ok when at centre back....Tombwfc wrote:There is nothing between them. I've not seen either of the games Ricketts's played in since his return, but he was good going forward. Re: Petrov
He did do well for what he was, an emergency choice.
So?

He's strange in that he seems to defend better at centre half than full back....Tombwfc wrote:He did do well for what he was, an emergency choice.

I like him, but think he suffers for his ability to play a number of positions.
If have him in cb ahead of Knight every day of every week though!
Re: Petrov
I don't know. He's still a 30 year old mediocre full-back who's spent much of his career in the lower leagues (albeit a usefully versatile one), you'd think if he was actually a Premier League standard centre half someone would've noticed.
I think his abilities there have been overrated.

Re: Petrov
Ricketts was a decent enough buy. He can do a job, but personally I don't see any difference between him and Steinsson, if anything I slightly prefer the Steiner. In which case, we could do worse than stick him at LB. Which still leaves us short in the middle.
