He's one of the best chances we have of a Wilshere/Sturridge -type impact. That's overplaying it slightly – he's not Messi or Messiah – but I think it's as close as we'll get. I've written a front-page piece on our options but it's a bit wordy, I presume Ratbert's in the workshop banging it into shape... :D

Hoillet strikes me as a bit of a highlights reel player, rather like our Turkish international Captain who can't get in our side at present.

Age is on Junior's side side but I'd be reluctant to spunk our Cahill wedge on him, hoping he's the answer to getting us out of the mire this season!!

IF we signed him and IF we stay up, a midfield 5 of

Hoilett-Holden-NRC-M Davies-Lee

would be appealing. Then we just need to worry about the defence.

Can't see Hoilett coming here unless we are the only interested party to make a move.. would make sense with the ageing Petrov though.

The more I think about it, the less it makes financial sense.

According to Nixon: "Ream has cancelled his honeymoon and will be coming over ASAP."

He probably made it up to secure a few more followers on Twitter, mind.

I imagine signing Hoilett would also rule us out making a move for Tuncay (thank fook!) in the summer and perhaps re-signing Petrov although I imagine it'll be a matter of how much of a wage cut Martin would be willing to take, despite the league we find ourselves in.

Hoillet? Would make sense individually, 21, highly rated, even if he turned out utter shit we'd be unlikely to make a loss (at the rumoured, yet unbelievable, £5million). Or is that the financial sense it isn't making? At that price I'd be chuffed to get him, provided we replaced Cahill adequately, and went 4-5-1 (break it up further how you like) permanently, and made sure N'Gog didn't get hurt.

Pleased if we did, but I doubt we will

However ... for those old enough to remember the Megson days (there, I've said it) we used to be obsessed with full-backs. Now we appear to be obsessed with wingers. How many can we get in a squad ?

Bit of both, and more. First, although Venky's are prone to weird decisions, it wouldn't make sense for Blackburn to sell because he wouldn't be free in the summer, he'd be tribunal-based - it's not a Cahill now-or-nowt thing. Second, if he's such hot shit he'd surely be asking more wage than our Slash-O-Budget affords. Third, it wouldn't make sense for us to sign a lucrative and possibly not relegation-reduceable contract - and certainly not, Wanderers_on_Tour, if we're planning to retain the presumably well-remunerated Petrov.

It makes footballing sense (young, pacy, reasonably adaptable) and to a certain extent it makes financial sense (resale value on the asset). But if he's asking - and these are finger-in-air predictions - £40kpw over three years then that's a £6m obligation on top of the (?)£5m transfer fee plus agents. It's much much more than even replacing Petrov (let's guess £50kpw x 6months = £1.25m remaining obligation, which would still require paying).

Addendum: if he did turn out shit, we'd make a mahoosive loss - nobody wants a 23-year-old has-been. How much did Blackburn get for Maceo Rigters?

The grand plan is to morph us steadily into a groundbreaking 2 6 2 formation, with 4 wingers.

We'll probably try re-inverting the pyramid I suspect

The reason we're obsessed with wingers this time, at least in the summer, is coz we didn't have any! We had, once Chungy was cut down in his prime, Petrov and Eagles. Mark Davies isn't a 'winger', and Kakuta has gone. Having hopefully decided this 4-5-1 lark is a good idea, what happens if Petrov or Eagles get injured? Mark Davies wide and Pratley in? Tuncay wide? Neither fill with confidence. Footballing wise I'd be delighted, he was awesome for them last year, pace, attacks players, good eye for a pass.

I take your point on wages DSB, but, you'd be backing resale value to make the difference worth paying, in the way one assumes was always the plan with Cahill (who may not have signed on massive wages, but must be towards the top end now). The buy young sell high model might not actually make any money (we'll be making a loss on Cahill) but it at least loses less. On your calculations we'd have to sell Hoilett for about £12m to break even, it might not happen, but it's a lot more likely than selling Petrov for £5m ever was.

The resale comment was because I keep forgetting he isn't English! Higher risk then, yes.

Still, the sort of young, decent now, could be fantastic, player I'd hope we were targeting. Priority for me is a defender who can move, and isn't terrified of the ball, then either a winger or striker with genuine pace, I'd be chuffed if it was Hoilett. I can't see it, because I don't think we'll have the cash to match what Blackburn would want to sell to us, but I'd be happy at £5m.

:D. The four wingers is awesome though. We may miss somebody with the quality of Alexis Sanchez, but that second striker should make up for it!
