At an emotional service, held at the Reebok Stadium, to mark the first anniversary of Nat’s death, club chaplain Phil Mason revealed the monument will be placed outside the Reebok Stadium — and the club wants local people to help make the plans a reality.

Nat was one of Bolton’s most famous sons and he earned the nickname “The Lion of Vienna” after he scored twice in a heroic performance in England’s dramatic 3-2 win in Austria in May, 1952.

Following his death last year, thousands of people lined the streets for his funeral.

Now, Whites bosses are calling on Bolton people and community groups to dig deep and raise funds so the town can pay tribute to him.

The club and Nat’s family will also be making a contribution to the statue.

Nat’s son, Jeff Lofthouse, said: “Dad would be very humbled and honoured by the idea of a statue and really overwhelmed at the response of Wanderers supporters and the people of Bolton.”

Club chaplain Phil Mason will represent Wanderers throughout the project.

He said: “People can get involved in a whole variety of ways to contribute towards the Nat Lofthouse Memorial Fund.”
Fantastic news, will be donating ASAP and just hoping it's a decent piece of work done to a decent standard. The club did fantastic in making the stadium what it is and a good statue to a great player will be a fitting tribute.

Brilliant news.

I have to say - apart from thinking to myself - "at last!" - then that was my first reaction too!

Yeah a bit of a shame that the club wont fork out for it, but I'll be willing to contribute in any way I can.

As soon as we find out how to donate I'll promote it on the site as well.

Finally, great news, but I'm with the others and surprised that the club aren't paying for it the tight feck*.

I'm sure it would be better if the donation suggestion was still open for charitable contributions rather than the community paying for it to be built?!

Great news... Maybe the club thought fans would want to be part of the process? Sort of a fans statue in honour of the great man!

Happy it seems the family are on board. Rumours in the past they weren't keen. Don't think it should go ahead without their consent.

Was the only reason the man didn't want one when he was alive embarrassment/modesty?

My thoughts to. A bit knee-jerk to suddenly suggest the club aren't willing.

Maybe they aren't, but we shoud at least find out before we start hanging effigies of Gartside & Eddie Davies. I mean, what's Eddie ever done for the club ?
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
