The penalties thread.
Apart from deliberate handball, penalties should be banned altogether in the modern game. They've become a focus for cheating, behaving like soft girls for the slightest touch and taking the blame by managers as a reason for winning/losing matches. They've also put massive presure on referees who can get sometime undeserved criticism for giving/not giving them. Big muscular, physical types who are all agression in other areas go down like "poleaxed by a Centurion tank" victims at a touch that wouldn't upset a five year old. Cheating is rampant in a sport that's supposed to be for men. Our own defenders are terrified to tackle because they know full well what will happen if they go in 100 percent. Football's a contact sport and it's becoming more and more like netball every year. Ban penalties and let's level the field and show up the jessies for what they are.

Re: The penalties thread.
Not wanting to rock the boat, I totally agree about the cheating on the field that goes on, but we have our own "divers" as well as other teams. Davies for the monster bloke he is supposed to be hits the deck easy at times and Klasnic? so we'd better be careful who we label divers Stelios was quite good at that game too.TANGODANCER wrote:Apart from deliberate handball, penalties should be banned altogether in the modern game. People like Davies wouldn't have to dive if nobody else did and defenders wouldn't go down holding their faces for a tap on the shin..

End penalties? Good god....

Give over...
Say you are losing 1 nil in the 90th minute and your striker goes clean through on goal. Whats to stop the keeper rushing out and punching the lights out of the onrushing striker to ensure he doesn't score. Sure the keeper will walk, but no penalties ensure his team defend the free kick or whatever crazy rule you're going to invent and get the three points.
Your system would encourage cheating.

Embrace technology? Yeah, that's a good one that's been kicked out a hundred times. What's your solution to the ever-growing army of cheats then? ( without any wild keeper rushing out and punching somebody (red card). I played no9 in every form of amateur league, got kicked, hacked, pulled, tripped and battrered and can't remember ever once getting a penalty given. It's all too easy now isn't it?BWFC_Insane wrote:End penalties? Good god....

Re: The penalties thread.
See, I don't think we've done too badly out of penalty decisions this season. Our last 2 wins saw a stonewaller at Blackburn not given when Robinson inexplicably wiped out someone with a 2 footed lunge, and Ricketts at Everton could easily have been penalised for his coming together with Donovan. There's 2 big calls in 2 big games that have gone our way.
Getting rid of penalties altogether would be madness. Sure, it seems harsh to penalise someone for a little tap on the ankle in the corner of the box with a free shot at goal, but them's the rules and they always have been. Defenders know they have to take care when trying to make tackles, and strikers know they can use quick feet to draw a foul and win a penalty. Nothing wrong with people going down easily. If they've been caught, they've been fouled, so why not make sure the ref sees it?

Ok, the past is the past. So are you actually saying you'd happily watch a game where someone like David Silva can show all of his skill to work a chance, only for some oaf like Zat Knight to come and hack him across the knees safe in the knowledge that nothing will happen?TANGODANCER wrote:Embrace technology? you present a much more attractive case than tango did - now I'm in two minds!!jimbo wrote:Ok, the past is the past. Re: The penalties thread.
I started the thread because I'm sick of cheating in football. It's ruining the game and every player knows if you run into the box and get tackled it's worth doing an agony somersault to con refs. It's a fact of life and happens every week. If technology is ever brought in (which I doubt it will be) then fine. The fact remains that cheats do prosper in the game as it stands right now. If you're happy with that, fair enough.

I think you're offering a false dichotomy!

Silva is one the most entertaining players to watch in the league. Why you wouldn't want to see him in full flow as a football fan is beyond me (unless against your team)!thebish wrote:you present a much more attractive case than tango did - now I'm in two minds!!jimbo wrote:Ok, the past is the past. errrr... given the scenario is that Zat Knight hacks him down - then surely it IS against our team??BWFC_Insane wrote:Silva is one the most entertaining players to watch in the league. I'm offering the correct analysis that you are proposing a false dichotomy. take it or leave it!TANGODANCER wrote:Course you do. The way I see it if the refs red carded divers instead of yellow managers would ensure their players don't dive for penaltys or free kicks for that matter. It does need dealing with but baning a penalty is not the answer

it's either/or:
1. agree with Tango's idea to ban penalties
2. be happy with cheats prospering
