As a matter of interest, and this may have been covered before, how do you know you are running exactly 5k?

I realize I am a JCL.

ahhh!

not a daft question at all! I measure it two ways... one on the rather excellent site http://www.mapmyrun.com - and I also use a swanky garmin watch that I have calibrated so that it measures how far I run by communication with a pod attached to my foot. They both agree on the distance (give or take 10m) - which is good enough for me!

Thankyou Reverend.

Any links to said devices or are they fairly generic?

I use mapmyrun too. I usually use it AFTER a run though just to confirm my time and pace.

Yesterday for instance I set out to do 5 miles at about 08.30 min. per mile pace. When I checked I discovered I'd actually done 5.5 miles at 08.00 min. per mile pace. I was particularly pleased as I'd done 13 miles the day before and was feeling a little tired.

Anyway 35 miles for the week and on programme for the marathon.

there are different kinds - GG uses an app that works via her swanky phone and links into her specially bought trainers... (Nike plus)

my garmin is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Forerunn ... 567&sr=8-3

I got it cheaper than that off ebay... I use the footpod - some of them come with a heart-monitor which takes all the relevant heart-readings for your workout.. the missus has one of those for her garmin fr60 - but has never used it... it straps round your chest and looks a bit uncomfortable to me...

but I am told that knowing how your heart performs during a workout so that you can make your workouts more effective - so i might experiment with it one day...

edit: POLAR and FITBIT also do similar devices, I believe.....

No, my lift got injured so pulled out and Mike really needed the car for the twins that morning. Bit gutted as I was looking forward to testing myself on a flat 4 miler but have a nasty chesty cold so probably wouldn't have done very well anyway. There's another west Sussex fun run league in a few weeks. Only 3.5 miles but I might enter that instead. Struggling with motivation at the moment....

Understandable. I guess the closer theBish gets to catching you, the more motivated you'll become.

Haha - that's true! My p.b for 5km is just over 24 min but I'm nowhere near that these days. Not running 5km much more then a minute faster then him now...

Recommended. Some of our club do this every year. I shan't be in attendance as I'll be doing my 22 to 24 mile longest run before the marathon.

I have downloaded an app for my Blackberry. Took a while as I did not know that you could have apps for a Blackberry.

It's called "Runtastic" and it seems to do what your app does. You can upload results to a site and track/graph performance etc.

I shall sellotape the phone to my shoe the next time I go for a run and report back.

Thanks for the help.

Intervals tonight. 1km followed by 3minutes rest. Thrice.

JFC.

Splits worked out at 4:07, 4:26 and then 4:02. Second bit was hilly.

I'm off to hurt for a bit.
