Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Kevin Davies
He did ok, playing against a team that had 10 changes, 80 mins into a game....
Not really worth the money he's on at all.
Any good offer + getting him off the wage bill would be great.

The holy Allardyce had no qualms about cutting off players as good as Djorkaeff, and we seemed a lot less skint then.

the only reason I can think we gave him a new contract is because I think Owen doesn't think he'll be able to sign a new striker this window!

That's no reason. He's already under contract.Tals-biggest-fan wrote:the only reason I can think we gave him a new contract is because I think Owen doesn't think he'll be able to sign a new striker this window!

There's a new thread in this somewhere, but look at our list of out of contract players.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:That's no reason. Look at our inability to bring fresh blood in during this window (permanents) we'll lose Tuncay and Boyata too.
We're going to need a shed load in the summer. And that won't be easy. Look at this one, doesn't always work bringing lots in.
Not easy to do either.
We're going to have to keep some of them.
I think OC thought it would be much easier than this to swap the older players out for younger models....

2 of our best players will be back in the summer though. so that'll immediately beef up the numbers. Plus, I imagine we'll bring 1 or 2 in. Just have to make sure we stay up first!

Re: Kevin Davies
Do you think we're capable of bringing players in that can immediately improve us this window? When you clearly have to pay more than in the summer.
If £7 Million isn't enough for a player of Zaha's 'calibre' then we've no feckin' chance of bringing anybody in who's proven.
The market is NOT Bolton Wanderers' fault

a) underestimating what season-changing talent actually costs nowadays
and/or
b) overestimating how attractive a proposition playing for Bolton might be in the eyes of such talent....

Maybe always been the case though. And its not always about "season changing" signings...thebish wrote:I think you are possibly:BWFC_Insane wrote:Very true and we've not helped ourselves with that this window!boltonboris wrote:2 of our best players will be back in the summer though. so that'll immediately beef up the numbers. Just ones to help out, like Taylor, Steinsson did.
And before that Laville et al...

Re: Kevin Davies
I have no doubt that Kevin Davies is among our highest-paid players. Nothing wrong with that per se: club captain, loyal servant, key player who in the previous three seasons had played in 113 or our 114 league games.BWFC_Insane wrote:There's a new thread in this somewhere, but look at our list of out of contract players. However, time moves on. It's clear that KD is no longer an automatic choice. And it's also clear that we need to keep wages down. We are (by Coyle's admission) going through a process of clearing the underplaying higher earners. And we're still very unclear indeed as to which division we're going to be in next season.
As far as I'm aware, football contract law says that older players have to be offered renewed terms at least as good as their last contract, or they have the right to leave on a free. So unless KD has accepted a wage cut, us offering him a contract extension would be filed under fiscal insanity.

If this is true I am really feckin' angry about it.
I thought we were finally seeing the light that there is life after KD.

The main point is though, no matter what he's on, it's money for old rope.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:...so we give him a new contract.Andy Waller wrote:Not really worth the money he's on at all.

Re: Kevin Davies
With respect, that's not the main point. We have to, and should, honour contracts we've promised. And players will always come ion and out of form and usefulness. What would most upset me - if indeed it's true (any official confirmation?) - is if we offer one of the largest slices of our salary overhead to a player who has been underperforming and, frankly, is entering an age when his usefulness can only be expected to decline further.Andy Waller wrote:The main point is though, no matter what he's on, it's money for old rope.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:...so we give him a new contract.
