The main point is though, no matter what he's on, it's money for old rope.
With respect, that's not the main point. We have to, and should, honour contracts we've promised. And players will always come ion and out of form and usefulness. What would most upset me - if indeed it's true (any official confirmation?) - is if we offer one of the largest slices of our salary overhead to a player who has been underperforming and, frankly, is entering an age when his usefulness can only be expected to decline further.
Sorry, i read that bit and thought you meant offer him a new contract on lower wages?

I thoroughly agree with what you're saying.

Ah, I see the confusion. I did think after that original post that it was misleading.

Were it up to me, we'd wait till summer before extending any contract. The last thing I'd do is offer Kev an extension at his current rate. Nothing personal; business.

This. He played well against Stoke and well in the 15 minutes against Swansea last week. That's all he's done all season. That does not deserve a new contract.

I fxcking despair, I really do. On that basis, and the number of times the whole team, most of the time including him, have spent in our box whilst the opposition battered fxck out of us, which of the team does deserve a new contract? Add to that the number of times he's been up there on his own with two/three defenders all over him while Jussi banged jump height balls at him with nobody else in sight. The bloke lost his edge, nobody can deny, he paid for it by being dropped to the bench, so that means get shut? Sheesh. Try blaming the system.

Not necessarily, but nor does it mean extend his contract.

On the flip, does it deserve a new contract? Can't hide from the fact that the team has looked better as a whole when Davies hasn't featured, and that his performances have been below par. Based on that, dishing out a new contract to one of the top earners is a little odd when we could wait til summer when our situation would be clearer.

David Ngog has finally been given the starting berth he deserves and he's put in ten times the performances Kevin Davies has done all season, and Ngog isn't exactly the 'target man' kind of striker either. He hasn't just lost his edge, he's been complete garbage in every game apart from the two I mentioned in my previous post.

In answer to your other question, I'm not sure who's out of contract at the end of the season but let me know who is and I'll give a yay and nay next to each.

ok - if we blame the system....

now we seem to be settling into 4-5-1 - would you want KD to start up-front as the "1"? if not - why not?

According to Alan Nixon in the Mirror, we have 10 contracts up in the summer (it was 11 with Cahill):
Jussi Jaaskelainen
Gretar Steinsson
Zat Knight
Paul Robinson
Ricardo Gardner
Sean Davis
Robbie Blake
Martin Petrov
Kevin Davies
Ivan Klasnic

Bish, I'm not in the mood for one of your question-master debates. It's only since Bogdan came in and stopped wellying everything down the middle that our midfield have started playing football. If N'gog is going to work wonders, leave him there. OC won't start KD as you well know, but if N'gog gets injured, right now, what front-man options does he have? Even KD must have realised that. I wouldn't even start Jussi right now while we're a winning side.

Yes to Klasnic?
No to Gretar, must be partly because we have a lot of options back there.
SKD has 16 games to impress us/someone for next year, his years of service doesn't count for anything if he's not going to look like he's bothered.

also - no - I don't think the Bogdan change was the key to our formation change/success...

That's no reason. He's already under contract.
There's a new thread in this somewhere, but look at our list of out of contract players. Look at our inability to bring fresh blood in during this window (permanents) we'll lose Tuncay and Boyata too. We're going to need a shed load in the summer. And that won't be easy. Look at this one, doesn't always work bringing lots in. Not easy to do either. We're going to have to keep some of them. I think OC thought it would be much easier than this to swap the older players out for younger models....
I have no doubt that Kevin Davies is among our highest-paid players. Nothing wrong with that per se: club captain, loyal servant, key player who in the previous three seasons had played in 113 or our 114 league games.

However, time moves on. It's clear that KD is no longer an automatic choice. And it's also clear that we need to keep wages down. We are (by Coyle's admission) going through a process of clearing the underplaying higher earners. And we're still very unclear indeed as to which division we're going to be in next season.

As far as I'm aware, football contract law says that older players have to be offered renewed terms at least as good as their last contract, or they have the right to leave on a free. So unless KD has accepted a wage cut, us offering him a contract extension would be filed under fiscal insanity.
Older players? They have a right to leave on a free anyway shirley? It's under 23's that have to be offered same or better in order to be able to go to a tribunal. If Davo has got a new contract I'd be very surprised if it'd on the same basic wage.

You may be right about kids. for grown-ups I was thinking of Garry Nelson's autobiography Left Foot Forward in which the player's club had to match the previous contract or offer a free transfer - which is of course now an option for all out-of-contract players.

Still doesn't mean we should offer him the same contract for much less work. Or any contract at all until we know where we're playing next season.

But it's all moot considering the latest noises seem to be that KD hasn't been offered a contract anyway.

Man, I 'm tired.

I'd keep Steinsson, if he continues his current form till the end of the season.
