I don't like swimming but see it as a necessary evil. Did you swim continuously? If so Bravo!
Try swimming in sets to break things up and improve your stamina.
Example:
Warm up. 8 x 25m Front Crawl
Then 3 sets of 50m 1 X FC, 1 x Arms only 1 x legs only (use a float if you need to and hold it at arms length) 20 seconds recovery between sets.
Warm down 8 x 25m Front Crawl
That's 850 m overall (over 1/2 mile)
Haha no, not continuously. Had to stop a few times. It's like i've forgotten how to breathe!
See that's the thing...I doubt I could finish the warm up properly atm. just feels very weak. Not brilliant as next year I want to progress onto triathlons and, if everything is going well, i want to have a stab at an ironman before my I'm 30.
No harm in trying though

well - nobody else seems to look like a drowning wombat - so I must be doing summat wrong! others seem to glide effortlessly through the water expending very little energy - whereas i splash and thrash and am knackered after 2 lengths! - it's not a pretty sight, believe me!Bruce Rioja wrote:That's it, isn't it?thebish wrote:not the way I do it it's not!! I can do the arms bit - and the legs bit - but try to do both and I'm like a drowning wombat....Bruce Rioja wrote:How can you need 'teaching' breast-stroke? Other than for walking it's the most basic movement known to man.thebish wrote: still - GG's gonna teach me breast-stroke tomorrow - so will be awesome next time and I will totally pwn those old biddies!

i'd much rather just do crawl - i can do that - but i suspect b'stroke uses different muscles so is good to add in the mix!

That's just technique. The more you practice, yadda yadda yadda........
You're exactly at the stage where I am. I am doing the Bedford-Tri sprint series this year after which I'll do an olympic distance. Next year I'll move up to Half Ironman and then a full one within a couple of years. Difference is, I'm nearly twenty years ahead of you in age.

And if GtE (who is a very old gimmer) can do it, you'll have no probs Verbal. He's practically drawing his pension!Gary the Enfield wrote:Verbal wrote:Gary the Enfield wrote:Verbal wrote:Back from swimming. First time since school.

I think you're a fair way ahead of me GtE in terms of fitness...I only packed in the smokes properly at christmas (by properly i mean no cheeky ones at weekends anymore and basically convincing myself i wasnt a smoker when in fact i still was) and im clearly not there yet in terms of speed, swmming etc. Just need to stick with it proprely.Gooner Girl wrote:And if GtE (who is a very old gimmer) can do it, you'll have no probs Verbal. Not too old to clamber up that scaffolding and sit next to Bruce when the show starts.Gooner Girl wrote:And if GtE (who is a very old gimmer) can do it, you'll have no probs Verbal. Re: The athletics/running thread
Great to see that whilst I've been away so many have got into running again, given up cigs, smashed PBs - seriously well done folks.
I got a place in London marathon through my club, put in for a ballot more in hope than expectation & was amazed when I got a place, so training has been majorly upped these last few weeks.
GtE - I'll be up for a wee jogette next week if you're in town. Nowt too hard core please - I'm doing the Winter Hill fell race on Sunday for the 1st time. I've been advised it takes a few days to recover

Re: The athletics/running thread
Well i went for a swim tonight, first exercise in well over 2 weeks thanks to the nasty cough lingering (unless you count teaching year 6 how to stand on their heads or taking the twins 'swimming' as exercise - which i don't.)
I did actually DO some swimming but took it very easy cos
1. I went with a friend, so a good deal of time was spent in the jacuzzi chatting
and
2. I couldn't find my cozzie, my spare is at school and i'm still not brave enough to show my fat baby belly to the world by donning a bikini, so i wore my maternity tankini. BIG mistake. It really does not now fit me (probably cos i'm not 9 months pregnant with twins...) In fact, it was quite indecent and i ended up flashing a boob, nipple and all, to the swimming public of The Triangle Leisure Centre, Burgess Hill. Talk about mortified.
Who knows what might have happened had i attempted a fast front crawl!
Perhaps i should stick to running...
