John Nash, the chairman of Care UK, gave £21,000 to fund Andrew Lansley’s personal office in November.
Mr Nash, a private equity tycoon, also manages several other businesses providing services to the NHS and stands to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Conservative policies to increase the use of private health providers.

Nash, like lots of these PE types, has all kinds of interests, including healthcare.
And we are talking about picking up office costs here rather than private brown envelopes...
Old news, anyway.

Re: The Politics Thread
I have read quite a few posts in this thread castigating the Tories for their affinity with bankers. Which is fair enough, I suppose. Then I read this and now I don't know what to think. No doubt one of our more well-informed regular contributors will put me right. It's all a puzzle, isn't it?

Re: The Politics Thread
I think you'll find most people associate politicians with bankers. The lad who edits the spectator did the comment in the Telegraph recently and pointed out that its just not as simple as Tory/Labour Left/Right anymore. Thats old hat now. There are wings of either party who believe significantly different things. So yes (and indeed no) there are parts of the Tory party in bed with bankers. Just because the other lot are aswell proves nothing, other than the other lot are aswell.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Any thoughts on the Private Eye story regarding New Labour's love-in with the financial sector?

I can't remember anyone on here suggesting that new labour did not bend their bots to the bankers...

Maybe so Bish. However I can recall quite a few occasions on which you waxed lyrical about the iniquitous Tories and their friends the bankers. I cannot recall any instance in which you climbed into Comrade Brown, Mandelson, Balls, Blair et al over the same issue. I may be mistaken, of course.

Well lets be clear here. The last Labour government, made the BoE independent. That's because it didn't like it very much.Zulus Thousand of em wrote:Maybe so Bish. They also evolved the SIB into the fearsome Financial Services Authority to beat errant bankers and drive them to the poverty line.
What could be clearer indication Labour's malcontent?
The gongs awarded were just a ruse whilst they got round to abolishing the House of Lords.
I'm surprised you'd see it any differently.
