All of which inconveniently brings us back to the nagging question of why everyone else has their own manufacturers and we don't?

a). Thatcher fckd up manufacturing in the UK
b). The unions are so short sighted they've closed more factories than Hitler ever managed
c). European costs, employment terms, bureaucracy etc., etc. make much of European manufacturing impossibly uncompetitive
d). Some mixture of the above
e). Seimens is a much funnier name & anyway everyone though Bombardier was a beer
f). Wibble

All of which makes perfect sense, apart from C. Given that the Germans and French have managed to retain a much greater indigenous manufacturing base.

Though I must say, E does go some way to explaining this phenomenon (a?).

Sorry, I was having a shower - it is earlier here than there. And you have all cleared it up for which my thanks. Bombardier is a Montreal-based multinational and so, sorry Bruce, the pronunciation is French and not Wells ale (whatever that is). They have sold off their leisure division (skidoos, seadoos, etc.) and concentrate on trains, engines and aircraft (commercial and military). I believe they have UK plants in Derby, Nottingham and Belfast (the last makes wings for aircraft). My son works for their military aeronautic division on the CF18 and the soon to come CF35. He also had to fix collapsing undercarriages on the commercial side. With a family connection I naturally asked what the article Zulus posted referred to. Since I was only interested in one bit I cut out the long irrelevance - thereby creating confusion, mistaken identity, etc. My apologies. Tomorrow I am going to see the Gondoliers so some experience with confusion mistaken identities, etc. may come in handy.
