Put the pitchfork down; he probably means that providing we stay up and given 90% of our players will be out of contract we'll be in a financial position we've not been in for many years. i.e. with a bit more stability.

And with a team full of Darren Pratleys.

The positives are that he didn't dismiss 4-5-1. Well that's one positive.

On the one hand you don't want the manager to be in the media saying what formation he's going to play weeks in advance, but on the other you want it to be "solid". Fingers crossed that the penny's dropped re formation.

Reading "Why England Lose" at the moment, just started really but it's very good. Most of us agreed that most/all of the 10-12 out of contract players could leave and we'd be ok. I'd much rather buy Gary Cahills and Anelkas and Mark Davies and Tim Reams to improve, get some decent performances from and sell at a profit before they get too expensive wage-wise (as talked about in the book). If we can't do it with academy kids then the likes of Ngog, Ream and free transfers within the wage structure sounds good to me. Not having some of the older players would be good for us, whichever league we're in. It's just unfortunate we can't sell them on.

In this case its very firmly down. I just didn't understand that one comment from an otherwise decent interview.

I'm not convinced by your explanation, but I suppose it makes some sort of sense.........surely he's not deluded enough to think "top ten" is still a possibility?

I'm fairly sure it is about finance; the article comments to that fact...

And after two years of heavy restructuring on the playing and financial front, the manager believes that a united front will be vital if the club is to reap the rewards of their hard work in the summer.

Makes more sense for it to be about financial stability than him suggesting we're heading for Europe; though given his high levels of delusion, I'm not ruling anything out.

Where I genuinely get confused with Coyle is that he's talked about getting the wage bill down, bringing in young, hungry players etc. Which to an extent he's started to do with Sordell etc.

However this is all very at odds with his first summer window with us where he signed, Robbie Blake, Klasnic and Petrov. Then taking that forwards gave Blake a contract extension this summer and kept Petrov despite MLS interest....

I genuinely don't see the grand strategy he talks about (perhaps we can't see it as its all behind the scenes?). If the grand plan is to "get rid" of the older players this year when they're out of contract then fine, but Coyle has contributed to that ageing squad as highlighted above.

We have 10? out of contract in the summer. Presumably few if any of those will be kept. Interesting to see how/if they are replaced. IF we stay up you can't just let 10 experienced heads go without some sort of replacements IMHO.

I can see most of those 10 going.

All 10 of those players aren't guaranteed starters for us anymore. The change-over's already been happening gradually. Gretar, Knight, Petrov and Ricketts are the only first-ish teamers out of the 10.

If we'd have sold Petrov last month just to get him off the bill, it would've been economics over football.

If we don't renew his contract (at a high wage level) this summer, and actively seek a replacement, it would seem to me a fair balance.
