Mark Connolly
Any good? Just joined Macc on loan.

I put it in the loan thread, then saw it was a 'sticky' so might not get spotted.
Cheers!

Does his right arm look like the back of a a shithouse door? Is the big questionAndy Waller wrote:Ben Mills sorry!

Re: Mark Connolly
I thik that mills has done ok. He'scome in in a really tough time because we had so many injuries and was really thrown in at the deep end. He'll probably not get much game time for the next couple of weeks because the first choice lads are back, but will be a useful player next season i think.

Re: Mark Connolly
Put it this way ... we paid £1m for him a couple of years ago & Wolves considered bombing the Reebok due to it.Silkyman wrote:Any good? Just joined Macc on loan.

However, since then & despite a couple of loan outs, when we were in a true defensive crisis a few weeks ago he never even saw the bench.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Mark Connolly
A premier league club's fringe player could be the best at the club at our level!
Fingers crossed he lives up to potential.

Re: Mark Connolly
Bit of an oddity really.
Was the captain of the reserve team but when a few of the youngsters started to fill up the bench and break through to the first team (Vela against Citeh last year) and Blakeman, Riley, (O'Halloran?) etc. this year he hasn't even had a look in.
Only time I can recall seeing him was Bradford away in a pre season match last year, looked decent enough against that level of competition but still miffed if there was some behind the scenes dispute to why he hasn't seen more action.

Re: Mark Connolly
Is it, maybe-just-maybe, a payment clause activated upon first-team action? Does anyone have proper details of the fee and its structure? If, for example, it was £1m on his first-team debut...
Re: Mark Connolly
Connolly has only just turned 20 so it would be a surprise if he had broken into the first team. There are not many young centre halves playing in the Premier League and the fact that he is the captain of the reserves means he has a good attitude to the game.
Only time will tell if he is good enough so hopefully he will get a few games under his belt at Macc to gain the valuable experience he needs.

I like him, but I think the issue is his height. Not sure he's tall enough for premiership football at centre back and then its a question of where he would play....

Re: Mark Connolly
You could be correct with the height thing but according to Wiki he is 6' 1". The same height as Tim Ream.BWFC_Insane wrote:I like him, but I think the issue is his height. Not sure he's tall enough for premiership football at centre back and then its a question of where he would play....
I certainly wouldn't want to contemplate a centre half pairing of Ream and Connolly.

Re: Mark Connolly
as he shrunk since we signed him ? I assume people were aware of his height when we got him from Wolves ... & there have been plenty of average height centre halfs over the years.malcd1 wrote:You could be correct with the height thing but according to Wiki he is 6' 1". Plus, if he has a footballing brain he could be moved the defensive midfield or full back if his height was a real worry. Neither of these seem to have been tried .... I fear we must believe he's not quite 'got it'.

Knight starts out at 6' 6" and manages to jump to about 5' 2"

Re: Mark Connolly
There is slight animosity between the player and the manager, stemming from a practical joke that was played on Coyle while he was asleep on a flight during the pre-season US tour. (Remember he was one of the few reserve lads taken to America) as a result, they don't have a good working relationship which is why he's been overlooked this season.
Re: Mark Connolly
Well now we have to play the game of imagining what that joke might've been.
I'll go with putting a gin and tonic in his hand.
